Why Did Amari Cooper Suddenly Retire From the NFL?

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Amari Cooper announced his retirement from the NFL, shocking the organization and fans alike.

The Raiders had drafted him as the fourth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Alabama, making this a full-circle moment that ended unexpectedly.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport broke the news on Thursday, September 4, in a post on X.

The timing of this retirement is particularly surprising. At the end of training camp, Cooper had just signed a one-year deal with Las Vegas, reuniting with the franchise where he began his professional journey. Instead of taking the field for another season, he informed the team he no longer wanted to continue playing.

What Made Cooper’s Career So Notable?

Cooper was a five-time Pro Bowler, earning those honors in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2023. His decade in the league took him through multiple organizations and established him as one of the more consistent receiving threats in the game.

“Comeback no more: #Raiders WR Amari Cooper has informed the team that he no longer has the desire to play and intends to retire, per The Insiders,” Rapoport wrote. “Cooper had signed at the end of camp in a hopeful reunion with the team that drafted. Now, he’s headed home from Las Vegas.”

Cooper’s journey through the NFL included stops with several franchises. He played for the Raiders between 2015 and 2018 before moving to the Dallas Cowboys. His career also included time with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. Cooper had 711 career receptions for 10,033 yards and 64 touchdown catches.

According to PFSN’s WR Impact (WRi) metric, Cooper’s 69.7 (D+) grade ranked 80th out of 99 qualifying WRs in WRi in 2024.

His rookie season in 2015 showed immediate promise, as Cooper finished third in the Associated Press Rookie of the Year voting. That early success set the tone for a career that would span a full decade at the highest level of professional football.

Cooper had hoped to stick with the Raiders this season after a lackluster 2024 season with the Bills. The return to Las Vegas represented both nostalgia and opportunity, a chance to finish his career where it began. Now, though, he’s going to go watch NFL games from the comfort of his couch at home.
