49ers WR Depth Chart: Will Ricky Pearsall or Jauan Jennings Step Up As WR1 With Brandon Aiyuk Injured?

With Brandon Aiyuk set to miss game time as he recovers from knee surgery, the 49ers hope Ricky Pearsall or Jauan Jennings can be their WR1.

The San Francisco 49ers are facing a major challenge right out of the gate, with star receiver Brandon Aiyuk not expected to return until at least Week 6. After tearing his ACL in Week 7 of the 2024 season, his absence leaves a massive void. With Aiyuk on the shelf for the first third of the 2025-26 campaign or more, the Niners desperately need someone in their receiver room to step up and claim the WR1 role.

Who Will Step Up in the 49ers’ Receiver Room?

The top two candidates to fill that spot are Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall. Besides Jennings and Pearsall, the Niners have Skyy Moore and Jordan Watkins available. The situation is complicated by Demarcus Robinson serving a suspension, while Jacob Cowing and Trent Taylor are on the IR.

This puts immense pressure on Pearsall and Jennings to fill the breach and become reliable receiving options for quarterback Brock Purdy.

Who is Jauan Jennings?

Jennings, 28, had a breakout season in 2024, his fourth year in the league. The former seventh-round pick was given a golden opportunity after Aiyuk went down. His role expanded even more after Pearsall was held out for a significant part of the season following a gunshot wound.

In 15 games, Jennings caught 77 of 113 targets for 975 yards and six touchdowns, with his longest play covering 45 yards. He showed the kind of physicality that Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan requires in his offense. Not only is he capable of winning contested catches, but he can also block effectively in the running game.

Unfortunately, his current situation is complicated. Jennings has been dealing with a calf injury throughout most of training camp. Additionally, he is demanding a new contract after his 2024 performance nearly matched the production he totaled in his first three years combined, which was 962 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

The Niners have not agreed to a new contract or honored Jennings’ subsequent trade request. He is entering the final season of the two-year extension he signed in 2024 and is scheduled to count $4.258 million against this year’s salary cap, with more than $8 million in dead money remaining from lingering void years.

As a result, he is currently listed as questionable for San Francisco’s season opener against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.

Who is Ricky Pearsall?

Pearsall’s rookie year almost ended before it truly began. After suffering a gunshot wound, Pearsall saw limited playing time until he was fully recovered. However, he flashed his immense promise late in the season. In Week 17 against the Detroit Lions, he exploded for eight catches for 141 yards and a touchdown.

The 2024 first-round pick, taken 31st overall, kept that momentum going in Week 18 with six catches for 69 yards and another touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals. He has shown a good rapport with Purdy in training camp, and there has been widespread speculation that he could be a breakout player in 2025.

However, the question remains. The Niners will likely spend the first few weeks of the season figuring out if Pearsall and Jennings can operate as a tandem or if one will assert himself as Purdy’s definitive go-to target.
