The San Francisco 49ers enjoyed another decently successful, albeit injury-plagued, 2025-26 campaign.
The offseason is not even 24 hours old; however, the team, which has historically struggled with keeping players healthy and on the field, has been hit with another serious and unfortunate injury situation to one of its veteran defensive linemen.
49ers Defensive Star Injured in Scary Off-Field Incident
According to San Francisco 49ers beat writer Matt Barrows of The Athletic, defensive lineman Keion White was involved in a shooting early this morning at an event in San Francisco.
White was reportedly shot in the ankle after an altercation, leading to the 27-year-old being forced to undergo emergency surgery.
What makes the situation more unfortunate is the fact that the San Francisco Police Department stated that White was not believed to be a part of the altercation that led to shots being fired.
It remains to be seen who was involved with the shooting; it appears that White was an innocent bystander at the time of the incident. It is undoubtedly a scary situation for the native of Garner, North Carolina, who was traded to the 49ers back in October 2025.
From SFPD: “A preliminary investigation revealed a verbal altercation occurred between two groups inside a business. The victim was injured when shots were fired by an unknown suspect.”

This is not the first time that a San Francisco player was shot during the offseason, as comparisons to an incident involving promising young wide receiver Ricky Pearsall are hard to ignore. Pearsall was shot through the chest in August 2024 during an attempted robbery while he was on his way to an autograph signing event.
Pearsall fought back and was shot in the chest, but the bullet exited his back without hitting any vital organs. The robber also got shot, taking a bullet from his own gun during the struggle. Pearsall was able to make a full recovery, making his NFL debut only a few months after the incident.
While recovery timelines naturally vary per individual, given the fact that White was able to already undergo surgery, he should have enough time to recover ahead of the 2026 season.
White started two games for San Francisco last season, recording 1.5 sacks and 12 combined tackles for his new squad. His recovery from the shooting and subsequent surgery remains to be seen; however, it is an encouraging sign that he is reportedly “OK” following the incident.
