The San Francisco 49ers face a defining offseason decision as they attempt to extend their championship window with several core players nearing the later stages of their careers. One recent prediction suggests the franchise might explore a major move on the defensive side of the ball, potentially pulling off a blockbuster trade to strengthen its pass rush.
Prediction Links 49ers to Blockbuster Trade for Superstar Pass Rusher
NFL writer Ayrton Ostly of USA Today recently outlined several trade scenarios that could reshape the league during the 2026 offseason. One of those predictions involved the 49ers acquiring superstar Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders.
Crosby signed a contract worth $106.5 million and has established himself as one of the league’s most disruptive edge defenders. He recorded double-digit sacks in consecutive seasons, earned AP All-Pro honors in both of those years, and twice led the NFL in tackles for loss.
The veteran pass rusher continued that production in 2025, finishing with 10 sacks across 15 games and earning his fifth Pro Bowl selection. He also ranked second in PFSN’s NFL Edge Impact Metric. A move to San Francisco could create one of the most dangerous edge combinations in football. Pairing Crosby with Nick Bosa would give the 49ers two elite pass rushers capable of overwhelming opposing offensive lines.
The potential trade prediction also reflects San Francisco’s current competitive timeline. The team still features cornerstone players such as Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Trent Williams, and Fred Warner, but several of those stars are entering the later stages of their careers.
Adding another elite defender could help the 49ers push deeper into contention while their core remains intact.
Raiders’ Reset Could Make Trade Logical
The scenario also reflects the changing direction of the Raiders franchise.
Las Vegas is entering a new era under first-time head coach Klint Kubiak while preparing to build around quarterback prospect Fernando Mendoza. The team has reached the playoffs only once during Crosby’s tenure and has lost 27 games over the past two seasons combined.
Timing plays a major role in trade speculation. Crosby will turn 29 before next season and is coming off knee surgery after being shut down late in 2025. If the Raiders are two or three years away from true contention, draft capital could align more naturally with that timeline than keeping a veteran edge rusher approaching his 30s.
Financial factors could also influence the decision. Crosby signed a three-year extension last offseason, but moving him would leave Las Vegas with a manageable $5.1 million dead-cap hit while saving more than $30 million, according to OverTheCap. That flexibility, combined with the Raiders’ projected cap space and eight draft picks, could accelerate a roster reset.
For San Francisco, the calculation centers on winning now. Acquiring Crosby would signal that the franchise intends to go all-in while its championship window remains open.
