The San Francisco 49ers won their Week 1 matchup against NFC West rival Seattle. But it came at a cost, as quarterback Brock Purdy was banged up in the process.
Latest Update on Brock Purdy’s Injury
On Thursday, September 11, NFL insider Ian Rapoport provided an update on Purdy’s status and revealed that the quarterback is expected to miss two to five weeks with a turf toe variant.
“49ers QB Brock Purdy is out 2-5 weeks with a turf toe variant, sources say,” Rapoport wrote. “With this timeline for 49ers QB Brock Purdy, he’s likely to miss games against the Saints and #Cardinals, at least. Then, his availability will be determined by how his rehab goes.”
The 49ers’ next five games are against these teams:
- at New Orleans Saints
- vs. Arizona Cardinals
- vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
- at Los Angeles Rams
- at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
What Did Kyle Shanahan Say About Purdy’s Injury Status?
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Shanahan kept his comments short. But he did reveal it is unlikely his fourth-year quarterback will play against the Saints this week.
“I think it’s a long shot,” Shanahan said during a press conference.
Shanahan noted that it’s Purdy’s toe injury, not his shoulder, that could keep him out for over a week. The coach explained that Purdy injured the toe on a 7-yard scramble late in the first half, rolling left before being tackled near the sideline by Seahawks safety Julian Love.
Mac Jones, a former No. 15 draft pick, will take the reins while Purdy recovers.
“If he (Jones) has to go this week, he’ll lead the guys,” Shanahan said on Monday. “The guys will believe in him, and I know he’ll do his job at a high level.”
Purdy went 6-9 as the 49ers’ starter last season, throwing for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Against Seattle on Sunday, he completed 26 of 35 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, closing out the game by orchestrating the decisive touchdown drive.
In May, the 49ers locked up Purdy with a five-year, $265 million extension that includes $181 million guaranteed and $165.05 million across the first three years. At the time, only Dak Prescott, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, and Tua Tagovailoa carried a higher average annual value.
Purdy was the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, but he eventually beat out veteran Jimmy Garoppolo and former No. 3 pick Trey Lance to earn the starting job. Initially thrust into the role because of injuries, Purdy impressed during a five-game audition and the playoffs as a rookie, cementing his status as the 49ers’ future.
Coming into this season, Purdy’s efficiency was a clear strength. He holds a 67.5 percent career completion rate with 64 touchdowns against 27 interceptions. In 2023, he earned a Pro Bowl nod and finished fourth in MVP voting, leading the NFL in yards per attempt, touchdown rate, passer rating, and QBR.
Jones, a fifth-year pro, spent 2024 with the Jacksonville Jaguars as Trevor Lawrence’s backup. Shanahan will have to rely on him for now.
