San Francisco 49ers fans received troubling news this week, as head coach Kyle Shanahan was seriously injured in a car accident during his summer break. However, general manager John Lynch has provided a positive update on Shanahan’s recovery and his expected availability as the team prepares for the 2026 season.

Shanahan’s accident reportedly occurred near his Northern California home on the evening of July 14. He was involved in a collision with an SUV and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remained overnight before being discharged.
The crash left Shanahan with a broken nose, three fractured ribs, a broken hand, and a severe concussion, according to ESPN. He also required more than 40 stitches to treat facial injuries. He has made encouraging progress in recovering from most of his physical injuries, but he is still experiencing lingering effects from the concussion, as Lynch said during Saturday’s media session.
“Kyle is doing good,” Lynch said. “He’s got some bumps and bruises. He did suffer a concussion in the accident. Has some lingering effects from that concussion. Kyle is basically going to be in the concussion protocol.”

Lynch expects Shanahan to participate in some practices only in a limited capacity while he continues his recovery. The concussion remains the primary concern, and its recovery can be unpredictable.

Shanahan owns a 91-72 record, including both regular-season and playoff games, since taking over as the 49ers’ head coach. San Francisco has reached two Super Bowls under his leadership and enters the 2026 season once again seen as a championship contender due to one of the league’s elite rosters.
As San Francisco will open the season September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, Shanahan’s availability remains a major topic. However, Lynch had an optimistic answer on the possibility of Shanahan not being able to travel to Australia for Week 1’s game.
“That is not what we’re anticipating,” Lynch said. “The expectation is, long before that, he’ll be better.”

Shanahan informed his assistant coaches of the crash on Tuesday, and Chris Foerster will now oversee head-coaching responsibilities until Shanahan is cleared to return. Foerster has been part of Shanahan’s staff since 2019 and is well-versed in the team’s systems and day-to-day operations.
Lynch also confirmed that defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, and special teams coordinator Brant Boyer will continue handling expanded responsibilities during Shanahan’s absence.
