Brandon Aiyuk Injury Update: 49ers GM John Lynch Provides Latest Info on WR’s Status

Will Brandon Aiyuk suit up this season? San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch shares new insight on the wideout’s injury and outlook.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk continues to make progress, according to John Lynch, the team’s general manager. Injuries are the one thing in football you just can’t fully plan for. A player can make the same cut nine straight times without issue, but on the 10th, something can go terribly wrong.

The human body, even though it’s built like a machine, reacts differently every time. On a football field, things like force and body torque never stay exactly the same from one rep to the next. Fortunately for Aiyuk, signs indicate that he is on track to return.

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk’s Recovery ‘Tracking’ Per GM John Lynch

Before last season, the 49ers signed Aiyuk to a four-year, $120 million extension that keeps him in Santa Clara through the 2028 season. That deal made it clear — San Francisco sees Aiyuk as their No. 1 receiver and a cornerstone of their offense moving forward.

For years, fans thought Aiyuk played the sidekick role to Deebo Samuel. But with one signature, the script flipped. The 49ers traded Samuel to Washington, clearing the way for Aiyuk to become the leading man in the wide receiver room. Still, before he steps into that role full-time, he has to overcome a serious setback.

During Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs, Aiyuk hurt his right knee while absorbing contact, twisting awkwardly as he went down. Tests later confirmed he tore both his ACL and MCL. That kind of injury requires not just surgery but a long, careful rehab to regain confidence and explosiveness.

Lynch gave an update during a recent appearance on KNBR, as reported by 49ers Webzone writer David Bonilla.

“Brandon’s tracking in a good way with his knee, and you’ve just got to kind of let that play out,” Lynch said. “We’re not going to put him out there until he’s ready, but we’re excited with our receiver group and where we’re at.”

That quote doesn’t give a clear return date, but it does send a message. The 49ers aren’t going to rush Aiyuk back just because of his contract. They’re taking the cautious route. If things go as expected, his return could line up with Week 8 — right around one year since the injury.

That would mean a late October return, at best. Lynch’s confidence in the rest of the receiver group hints they’re not banking on Aiyuk being back before midseason. With Brock Purdy locking in a new deal and the NFC West getting tougher across the board, the 49ers need their top receiver healthy when it matters most.
