Even with a ton of promise, the San Francisco 49ers’ question marks continue to mount as the 2025 season draws closer. After battling in overtime of Super Bowl 58, injuries devastated the 49ers’ roster last year, leading to just six wins on the season. This offseason, they decided to remake most of the support around quarterback Brock Purdy before signing him to a massive extension.
However, a significant component of that extension for San Francisco was compromising on some of the high-level talent on recent rosters. A big name like receiver Deebo Samuel was gone from the lineup, with the defense also taking major hits. However, the situation has gone from bad to worse for the Niners as another wide receiver could miss some time with a recurring injury.
San Francisco 49ers’ Wide Receiver Corps Devastated Once Again
Last year, injuries to Samuel, Christian McCaffrey, and Brandon Aiyuk hampered the team’s offensive ceiling. While McCaffrey looks set to return this year, Aiyuk could get a delayed start to 2025.
As a result, Purdy’s wide receiver corps has slim pickings. Their best option is Jauan Jennings, with Ricky Pearsall adding another injury risk on the roster. However, their reliance on Jennings might not be possible at the beginning of the season.
The latest reports from NBC Sports suggest that Jennings has a lingering issue in his calf. “49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings missed his third consecutive practice Thursday with a calf strain.” Unfortunately, it is a strain he’s already familiar with.

The report added, “Coach Kyle Shanahan said Jennings aggravated the calf injury that bothered him in the offseason.” For a team facing a serious dearth at the position, the loss of Jennings, who would likely be WR1 for the 2025 season, is a genuine blow.
To make matters worse, “There is no timetable for Jennings’ return.” The youngster had the best season of his short career in 2024. The injuries to McCaffrey, Aiyuk, and Samuel opened up an opportunity for the (now) 28-year-old to impress.

And impress, he did. Putting up 975 yards and six touchdowns nearly outclassed his efforts from the previous three seasons combined, where he tallied 963 yards and seven scores. It gave the 49ers enough to hope that he could fill the void left by Samuel’s departure.
However, with an uncertain timeline, it’s unclear if their potential breakout star will be back by the time the 2025 season gets underway. The missed time might also result in chemistry issues once he does find his way back into the rotation.
