The Brandon Aiyuk situation has been a peculiar saga over the last couple of years. Once heralded as a true superstar-caliber wide receiver, his stock has plummeted in recent months, as a public divorce with the San Francisco 49ers grabs all the attention.
Now, as it seems inevitable that the two sides go their separate ways, there is a chance that the former second-team All-Pro selection misses out on a chunk of his extension. At least, that is the method the organization is planning to adopt.
Brandon Aiyuk Could Leave Money on the Table
Drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Aiyuk quickly proved his value in the league. Becoming a key component for the 49ers, he put together back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023.
But there still remained some controversy about a potential extension with the franchise that drafted him. As a result, the contract extension process was extremely elongated the following summer, with a four-year, $120 million deal getting signed on August 30.
Unfortunately, he tore his ACL and MCL just seven weeks into the 2024 season. That was the last time the San Francisco faithful got to see him in action, as Aiyuk has remained away from the team for the entirety of the 2025 campaign as well.
After his lack of participation caused the team to void his guaranteed money, they eventually placed him on the reserve/left squad list. Since then, the situation has only worsened as the 49ers have pointed to a lack of communication from the star wide receiver.

On the other hand, Aiyuk’s public appearances have been at a minimum. Instead, through social media rants, he’s placed the blame firmly on the organization. But Matt Maiocco made it clear that San Francisco is already looking ahead from the entire situation.
“The 49ers have an incredible opening to go after the money they already paid Brandon. I don’t know the exact numbers that they will be able to get back, but I would put it somewhere between $13.8M and $18.4M. Whatever it may be, the 49ers are certainly going after that money.”
Maiocco also addressed the rumors of a potential move to the Washington Commanders. However, he wasn’t too optimistic about the change, believing his stock was at an all-time low after the events of the last two years.

“I just can’t imagine them going all in for Brandon, and for him to say he will sign with the Commanders, is he just speculating because one of his very good friends, Jayden Daniels, is the quarterback of the Commanders? I don’t know.”
Going a step further, he added, “I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility or out of the question that Brandon Aiyuk has played his final NFL game.” Maiocco’s belief also stemmed from the initial negotiation between Aiyuk and the 49ers for his current contract.
“I recall two years ago when they were going through this contract negotiation, there were people within the organization who thought that Brandon Aiyuk didn’t want to play football anymore because the 49ers had given him an offer, he sat on it and didn’t get back to them and the relationship really seemed to be fractured at that point where the 49ers really weren’t sure where Brandon Aiyuk’s mind was and where his urgency was.”
It remains to be seen how the entire scenario unfolds in the coming weeks or even months. But the 49ers seem to be done with any hopes of getting their wide receiver back in the lineup. Instead, as their focus shifts to the future and other aspects of the team, Aiyuk remains in no man’s land, at least for the time being.
