49ers Floated as Landing Spot for 64-TD WR Amid Injury Concerns for Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall

The 49ers face a wide receiver crisis in 2025 due to injuries, suspensions, and contract disputes. Could one veteran WR be the ideal solution?

The San Francisco 49ers’ preseason has already begun with concerns, particularly at the wide receiver position. With Brandon Aiyuk’s return date still unknown, the rest of the starting group faces uncertainty heading into training camp due to injury, suspension, or contract disputes.

In this scenario, there’s a possibility the franchise might seek another receiver on the market for the start of the season. Among the available names is a veteran wide receiver previously linked to the 49ers last offseason who could be the best option for both the team and the player.

Why Is Amari Cooper the Perfect Answer to San Francisco 49ers’ Receiver Crisis?

During the last season, the 49ers’ offense suffered from various injuries that hampered the team’s performance. Among the receivers, Aiyuk sustained the most severe injury, an ACL tear in the middle of the season that is expected to keep him out even for the first few games of 2025.

As training camp approaches, the news isn’t good for the other receivers on the roster. Currently, Ricky Pearsall will begin training camp on the PUP list, Jauan Jennings wants a new contract, and Demarcus Robinson is expected to be suspended by the NFL for at least three games at the start of the season.

Consequently, NFL Spin Zone listed the 49ers as a possible destination for free agent Amari Cooper, who enters his 11th NFL season in 2025, but is coming off his worst season in terms of production. He was traded mid-season from the Cleveland Browns to the Buffalo Bills, where he didn’t adapt to the team’s offense.

“With these questions, Cooper could serve as a safety blanket for a group that has a ton of questions,” Joshua Watt wrote in his article. “Cooper might not see the target volume he’s used to, but if he is willing to take on a smaller role, then this could make for an interesting landing spot.”

Although Aiyuk’s recovery is reportedly progressing as expected, the most probable timeline for his return is Week 6, when the team travels to Tampa to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Until then, without guarantees regarding the availability of the other receivers, the team will need help.

For the start of training camp, the 49ers will primarily rely on Jacob Cowing and rookie Jordan Watkins, who will have the opportunity to prove themselves to the coaches. Cooper’s presence would offer more security for quarterback Brock Purdy to operate the offensive system and provide more depth throughout the season.

What Does Aiyuk’s Timeline Mean for San Francisco’s Season Plans?

At this point, Cooper might sign with his future team for around $5 million for one season, possibly with productivity clauses that incentivize the player and reward him based on his performance. For San Francisco, which aimed to streamline the roster this offseason, this would fit perfectly into their plans.
