The ongoing saga between wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers has taken another dramatic turn, with their relationship remaining strained.
Following a lengthy contract hold-in during the 2024 offseason, Aiyuk secured a four-year, $120 million extension with $76 million guaranteed. However, after a knee injury cut short his 2024 campaign, and subsequent disputes led San Francisco to void his 2026 guarantees, many are looking back at how the relationship deteriorated.
As Aiyuk now publicly criticizes the NFL Players Association regarding his representation, one team observer is questioning whether the franchise should have recognized the warning signs before committing massive financial resources.
49ers Analyst Outlines Pre-Extension Red Flags Surrounding Aiyuk’s Standoff
The tension between Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers front office reached a breaking point after San Francisco voided approximately $27 million in future guarantees from his contract.
The 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list in December 2025, ending his 2025 season and pushing the two sides closer to a split. He recently aired grievances on Instagram, targeting both the team and the NFLPA over contract handling and agent representation. The public dispute follows a tumultuous period since Aiyuk signed his lucrative deal in August 2024.

“I want people to know that there were red flags about Brandon Aiyuk before the 49ers signed him to that huge contract extension,” Farmer noted during his analysis.
“Immediately after the Super Bowl, there were some passive-aggressive comments on social media, something to the effect of ‘Don’t forget who got you there,’ something to that extent,” Farmer added. “And then we had the shorts in practice. There were a lot of concerns throughout the offseason. I think the 49ers could have seen this coming. I know they absolutely regret making this signing.”
The financial commitment was largely driven by Aiyuk’s elite 2023 performance. According to the PFN WR Impact Metric, Aiyuk ranked as the No. 6 wide receiver in the NFL that season, hauling in 75 receptions on 105 targets for 1,342 yards, seven touchdowns, and had a 21.6 percent target share. His efficiency numbers were among the highest in the league, generating 81.8 Receiving EPA and a staggering +0.78 EPA per target.
Despite those individual numbers, his production plummeted in 2024 following the hold-in. Aiyuk caught just 25 passes for 374 yards and zero touchdowns over seven games before suffering a season-ending ACL and MCL tear in October.

With Aiyuk currently sitting on the reserve/left list and unwilling to formally request reinstatement, the 49ers retain complete contractual control over his future without any financial obligation to pay him.
While rumors continue to link the receiver to a potential move to the Washington Commanders to reunite with former college teammate Jayden Daniels, San Francisco has shown no urgency to grant a release.
Until Aiyuk files his reinstatement paperwork with the league, the standoff remains stagnant, leaving the former first-round pick’s playing career suspended indefinitely.
