The 2026 Panini Senior Bowl Halftime Show, presented by C Spire, will feature Southern University’s Human Jukebox Marching Band, celebrated worldwide for blending old-school soul with modern hip-hop into electrifying, high-energy performances.
Who Leads Southern University’s Human Jukebox?
Nicknamed for its ability to master current top 40 hits consistently, the Human Jukebox boasts a rich history in American culture, including seven Super Bowl and four Sugar Bowl performances, presidential inaugural parade appearances in 1981, 1993, and 1997, and a grand introduction for Floyd Mayweather ahead of his megafight with Manny Pacquiao in 2015, among many other showcases.
For nearly six decades, the Human Jukebox has performed alongside The Fabulous Dancing Dolls, who were famously invited to perform with Madonna during her 2012 Super Bowl halftime show and appeared in Beyoncé’s 2019 Netflix documentary “HΘMΣCΘMING: A film by Beyoncé.” In 2022, the Dolls were also highlighted in the eight-episode ESPN+ series “Why Not Us: Southern Dance,” produced by NBA legend Chris Paul.
Dr. Kedric Taylor, a four-year alumnus of the Human Jukebox, now serves as Director of Bands at Southern University. Taylor previously served as band captain and assistant to the director at Mattie T. Blount High School in Mobile, Ala., and as assistant director of both the Mobile All-Star Band and the Feliciana Community All-Star Band.
Another alumnus, Darrin Bedell, has been the voice of this ensemble for nearly 30 years, becoming a hallmark with his iconic call: “Mic check… one moment… are you ready?” Bedell has introduced the group for parades, national broadcasts, Super Bowl events, and countless other celebrations, becoming an integral part of the band’s tradition and pride.
“An opportunity to witness the Southern University Marching Band is an opportunity to witness music in motion,” the Human Jukebox website states.
“This band has raised the bar and set precedents for other collegiate marching bands and ensembles. Often imitated but never duplicated, the band prides itself on its unique ability to execute precision drills better than any other marching ensemble in the country.”
Recognized as USA Today’s top marching band in the nation and named the best collegiate marching band by Sports View Magazine, the Human Jukebox consistently leaves a distinctive impression on audiences both on and off the field. Attendees of the Panini Senior Bowl, set for Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1:30 p.m. CT inside South Alabama’s Hancock Whitney Stadium, will get an up-close look at the magic behind this world-renowned act.
