2024 NFL Schedule Release: 6 Teams That Deserve More Prime-Time Games in 2024

Which teams should get more primetime games next year? Six clubs -- including the Texans and Rams -- deserve more love from the 2024 NFL schedule release.

The NFL will release its 2024 schedule on Wednesday, May 15, setting the calendar for all 32 teams in the league.

That process includes orchestrating next season’s prime-time schedule. Deciding which teams to put on TV for Sunday/Monday/Thursday night and holiday slates has to be challenging, but we have a few recommendations based on last year’s schedule.

Let’s run through six teams who deserve more prime-time games than they received in 2023, beginning with arguably the most intriguing team in the league.

Monday, May 13 Update (8 AM ET): The NFL announced that the Baltimore Ravens will travel to take on the Kansas City Chiefs for the season opener on Thursday, September 5, with kickoff slated for 8:20 PM ET on NBC.

For all other confirmed games thus far, as well as the rumors around the schedule, we’re tracking all the NFL schedule leaks and confirmed game dates.

NFL Schedule Release | 6 Teams Who Should Get More Prime-Time Love

Houston Texans

2023 prime-time games: 0

The only division winner without a prime-time matchup in 2023, the Houston Texans are destined to land several games under the lights in 2024.

C.J. Stroud took the league by storm last season, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors while guiding Houston to the Divisional Round. The Texans didn’t stop adding this offseason, acquiring RB Joe Mixon and WR Stefon Diggs to bolster Stroud’s weaponry. Pass rusher Will Anderson Jr. — the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year — headlines a unit that brought in EDGE Danielle Hunter, DT Denico Autry, and LB Azeez Al-Shaair in free agency.

Indianapolis Colts

2023 prime-time games: 0

If the NFL is looking for an AFC South opponent to pit against the Texans in prime time, the Indianapolis Colts might be their best option. Let’s feature Stroud, last year’s No. 2 overall pick, against the No. 4 choice — Colts QB Anthony Richardson.

Although Richardson played in just two full games before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 5, his upside remains tantalizing. He looked like an NFL-ready, dual-threat quarterback in his brief 2023 action. With a healthy Jonathan Taylor and rookie WR Adonai Mitchell in tow, Indy’s potential offensive firepower is too much for the league to ignore.

Atlanta Falcons

2023 prime-time games: 0

Few teams project to have as significant of a QB upgrade as the Atlanta Falcons in 2024. Going from Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke to Kirk Cousins raises Atlanta’s floor and ceiling. A Zac Robinson-coordinated offense featuring RB Bijan Robinson, WRs Drake London and Darnell Mooney, and TE Kyle Pitts shouldn’t have any trouble putting up points.

The Falcons, who boast the NFL’s easiest 2024 schedule, have several exciting opponents on their slate, including the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. But a Cousins revenge game against the Minnesota Vikings has to be on the networks’ radar.

Arizona Cardinals

2023 prime-time games: 0

The Arizona Cardinals were the only team on this list to win fewer than nine games in 2023. Arizona wasn’t even close to that range, as rookie head coach Jonathan Gannon went 4-13 in his first season at the helm.

However, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the Cards in 2024. Kyler Murray played some of the best football in his career after returning from a torn ACL, showing immediate comfort inside OC Drew Petzing’s scheme. Add in No. 4 overall pick Marvin Harrison Jr., and Arizona could be cooking with gas.

The Cardinals played hard all of last season, earning surprising upsets over the Dallas Cowboys and Eagles. An NFC West matchup against the San Francisco 49ers or Los Angeles Rams could be worthy of prime time in 2024, as could intraconference games against the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills.

Los Angeles Rams

2023 prime-time games: 2

The Rams weren’t entirely shut out of prime time in 2023, but few expected much from Sean McVay’s team after they finished 5-12 the previous season. Los Angeles surprised en route to 10 wins and a playoff appearance last year and is now trying to win its first divisional title in three years.

Watching Matthew Stafford sling it to Puka Nacua, who broke nearly every rookie receiving record in 2023, is always fun, while fellow wideout Cooper Kupp could rebound after a disappointing, injury-riddled campaign.

Aaron Donald is no longer around, but the Rams’ defense features a mix of young contributors (DT Kobie Turner, EDGE Byron Young), free agent additions (DBs Tre’Davious White, Darious Williams, and Kam Curl), and early-round rookies (EDGE Jared Verse, DT Braden Fiske).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2023 prime-time games: 2

The Tom Brady-led Buccaneers always got plenty of prime-time slots, but the NFL only gave the Baker Mayfield iteration two evening games in 2023. Mayfield responded by posting the best season of his career. Tampa Bay won its third straight NFC South crown before advancing to the Divisional Round.

The Bucs re-signed Mayfield and Mike Evans this offseason and will return much of the same division champion roster. A matchup against the Eagles — whom Tampa Bay destroyed in a 32-9 Wild Card win — could make for must-see TV.
