Round 10: Brandin Cooks

Cooks is an explosive wide receiver

I like to build up my WR group in dynasty formats, especially with the lineup requirement of three wide receivers and a flex. I landed who I believed was the most explosive receiver still available in Houston Texans Brandin Cooks.

After the completion of the DeAndre Hopkins trade to the Arizona Cardinals for David Johnson mainly, the Texans wanted to bring in a veteran presence to their receiver corps. Hence, they filled that hole with the trade for Brandin Cooks from the Los Angeles Rams.

When he’s healthy, his numbers are excellent, ranking 16th in the league among active players in yards per reception at 14.3. Since his rookie season, he has not averaged less than 13.5.

Cooks does have a history of concussions, but he has only missed eight games in his 96-game career.

Cooks’ fantasy analysis

Cooks joins the Texans’ playmakers in Will Fuller, Kenny Stills, and newcomer Randall Cobb. Deshaun Watson will have multiple viable receivers to throw to on each play.

Since 2016, Cooks has averaged 74.3 catches per season, 1,153 receiving yards, 7.7 touchdowns, and 15.5 yards per receptions on three separate teams. He can fit in well with any quarterback, and if he can match his career averages, I have a steal here in the 10th round!

Round 11: Cam Newton

Cam Newton signs with Patriots to replace Brady

My quarterback room makes me a little nervous. Tua should be a fantasy fixture for the next decade, but does that start in 2020? Brees could be playing in his last season, and I desperately need another quarterback that I can insert into my lineup for Week 1. I decided upon the quarterback with the most upside in the newly signed Cam Newton of the New England Patriots.

There were rumors throughout the offseason that the Patriots were interested in Newton, but nothing came to fruition. Lately, it seemed likely that New England would roll with Jarrett Stidham as the successor to Tom Brady, who left via free agency to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Instead, the Patriots brought Newton in on what is essentially a one-year prove-it deal.

Newton’s fantasy analysis

Newton brings different aspects to the Patriots’ offense. He is a dual-threat, and his athleticism and sturdy build make him one of the league’s most dangerous threats under center.

Newton makes plays, but at what cost? He has missed 16 of his last 18 games and is coming off a severe Lisfranc injury. If healthy, Newton should win the starting job where he will work with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. McDaniels made Tim Tebow look like a fantasy stud, so what can he do for a healthy Newton?
