Ben Roethlisberger’s modest opinion swiftly evolved into a heated quarterback argument with commentary from media figures, previous players, and fans.
Never one to back down from a daring comment, Roethlisberger recently declared that he would rather take Aaron Rodgers at his peak than Patrick Mahomes as he is now. Then, the floodgates opened.
LeSean McCoy Blasts Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers in Fiery Debate
Former NFL running back and two-time Super Bowl champion LeSean McCoy had one of the more outspoken responses during an episode of “The Facility.” McCoy, who was seated next to James Jones and Emmanuel Acho on the FS1 show, aimed his comments directly at Roethlisberger and Rodgers.
“If Aaron Rodgers is so great, like y’all say he is in his prime,” McCoy said. “How is it possible for you to only have one Super Bowl appearance? That’s what quarterbacks do, the greats we talk about, they win championships.”
Rodgers’ resume was not the only point of contention for McCoy. It went straight to the core of evaluating excellence in the NFL. Although Rodgers has had a cannon of an arm, pinpoint accuracy, and made excellent decisions in his heyday, McCoy highlighted something that isn’t visible on a stat sheet: Winning when it counts most.
And then came the real sting.
“One thing about Big Ben, Big Ben hates,” McCoy added. “If you play 18 years and you have no All-Pros, not one first-team, not one second-team, I don’t respect players that talk a certain way, and you don’t have the type of success they have.”
McCoy Says Mahomes’ Rings End the Debate with Rodgers
That “they” is Mahomes, a player who, at just 29, has already accomplished more than most quarterbacks do in their careers. Three Super Bowl rings. Two MVPs. Countless unforgettable moments. Maybe most important of all, Mahomes has delivered in the most significant moments time and time again.
In contrast, Rodgers has a history of failing in the postseason. Several defeats in the NFC Championship. Questionable performances in pivotal matches. The postseason hasn’t always been kind to him despite his brilliance.
McCoy’s message, however, broke through the clutter: Excellence is about rising to the occasion when the pressure is at its peak, not just about talent. Mahomes is creating a legacy that is already difficult to equalize.
Undoubtedly, the argument about Mahomes and Rodgers will not be resolved very soon. However, McCoy claims that rings are used to begin and terminate the talk.
