The Atlanta Falcons entered this hiring cycle with ambition and momentum, believing their roster was ready for a bold coaching hire. Early optimism surrounded one high-profile candidate, but a sudden market shift has forced the Falcons to recalibrate. Now, a familiar name with proven credentials has emerged as the frontrunner, setting the stage for a pivotal decision.
Kevin Stefanski Takes Center Stage in Atlanta’s Coaching Search
The Falcons made a serious push for John Harbaugh, even conducting what The Athletic described as a “lengthy” virtual interview earlier this week. The Falcons’ belief was rooted in its young core, featuring Jessie Bates III, Drake London, James Pearce Jr., and Bijan Robinson.
Despite that appeal, Harbaugh ultimately preferred the New York Giants, closing one door and opening another.
With Harbaugh off the board, Connor Hughes of SNY reported that Kevin Stefanski has quickly become the Falcons’ top target. Hughes noted the league-wide expectation bluntly: “That was talk before: Whoever didn’t land Harbaugh would get Stefanski.” That prediction now appears to be playing out in real time.”
The #Giants & John Harbaugh are expected to finalize the deal for him to become their head coach today, per sources. They’re pretty close to getting it done, I’m told. I do not expect anything to change that.

On Saturday, an account named Ricky on X, which has accurately reported several NFL-related developments in the past, also claimed that Stefanski is gaining momentum as a leading candidate to become the Falcons’ next head coach.
Stefanski brings both success and recent adversity into the conversation. He was fired by the Cleveland Browns in early January, after six seasons. The Browns went 5-12 in 2025, finishing last in the AFC North for the second straight year.
Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam explained the decision in a statement, saying, “We have tremendous gratitude for Kevin’s leadership… but our results over the last two seasons have not been satisfactory, and we believe a change at the head coaching position is necessary.”
The organization emphasized that the move was not tied to a single breaking point, but rather a broader sense that it was time to move on.
Despite his dismissal, Stefanski’s resume remains strong. He posted a 45-56 regular-season record, reached the playoffs twice, and won NFL Coach of the Year honors in both 2020 and 2023.
From 2020 to 2023, he delivered the Browns’ highest winning percentage since the late 1980s, a stretch that included a playoff win over Pittsburgh and a return to the postseason despite extensive injuries and quarterback turnover.

The Falcons are not alone in their interest. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Falcons, Ravens, and Titans are all expected to pursue second interviews, with the Miami Dolphins also involved earlier in the process. Pelissero added that Stefanski’s next round of interviews could happen as soon as next week, suggesting a decision may be imminent.
NFL insider Dianna Russini reported on Saturday that Stefanski will also have a second interview with the Titans. “Atlanta isn’t the only second interview on Kevin Stefanski’s schedule,” she wrote on X. “The former Browns coach also plans to meet with the Titans again, I’m told. That interview is scheduled for Sunday.”
From a football standpoint, the fit is precise. Stefanski’s offensive background aligns well with the Falcons’ young skill talent, particularly Robinson and London, while also offering a structured environment for Michael Penix Jr.’s development. For a franchise seeking stability and direction, Stefanski provides both experience and upside.
If the Falcons move quickly and close the deal, it would signal confidence that recent struggles do not outweigh proven leadership. In a competitive NFC South, that calculation could define the Falcons’ trajectory for years to come.
