The Kansas City Chiefs came into the 2025 season with one thing on their minds: Redemption. After falling short to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, this year was supposed to be about payback. But just one week in, Kansas City already feels a little shaky.
Xavier Worthy Injury Update
The Chiefs not only suffered a defeat in their season opener to the Los Angeles Chargers, but they also lost one of their brightest young stars. On the game’s very first drive, wideout Xavier Worthy collided with tight end Travis Kelce on what initially appeared to be a routine play.
Instead, Worthy left with a dislocated right shoulder and didn’t return.
It was a gut punch for a team already missing Rashee Rice, who is serving a six-game suspension. Suddenly, Patrick Mahomes was left scrambling to spread the ball around to a thinner group of receivers, and the offense never found its rhythm in the 27-21 loss. For a team that prides itself on lighting up the scoreboard, it was uncharacteristic.

The silver lining? Worthy didn’t need surgery, so his season isn’t in danger. He’s already back at practice with a brace, running routes and hauling in passes. That quick return sparked hope among Chiefs fans that he might be ready for Sunday’s highly anticipated Super Bowl rematch with the Eagles.
Will Worthy Play vs. Eagles?
But Andy Reid isn’t ready to roll the dice. Speaking to reporters Friday, the longtime head coach didn’t hide his cautious optimism. “I’d probably tell you it’s slim, but there’s still a chance to play, yeah,” Reid said.
On Saturday, the Chiefs officially ruled out Worthy for the matchup with the Eagles, and honestly, it’s likely the smart call. While Kansas City would love to unleash his game-breaking speed against Philly, forcing the issue this early risks a setback that could prove far more costly down the road.

It’s a tough pill to swallow considering what Worthy did the last time these teams squared off. On the biggest stage of his young career, he shredded the Eagles’ secondary for 157 yards and two touchdowns. That outing showed just how explosive he can be in this offense—and why the Chiefs view him as a cornerstone for their future.
For now, patience is the key. Worthy’s ahead of schedule, and all signs point to him returning sooner rather than later. The Chiefs need him for the long haul, not just for one game in September.
Still, you can’t help but think how much fun it would’ve been to see him take the field against the team that broke Kansas City’s heart just a few months ago.
