‘Unacceptable’ — WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert Under Fire From U.S. Congressman Over ‘Repeated Attacks’ on Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham

Cathy Engelbert faces fresh scrutiny as a U.S. congressman condemns "attacks" on Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham.

Indiana Fever teammates Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham have been involved in two of the WNBA’s most closely scrutinized physical plays this season.

In June, Clark was struck in the throat by Phoenix Mercury star Alyssa Thomas, an incident that drew the attention of 11 Republican members of Congress.

On Saturday, Cunningham was sent crashing to the floor after Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington made contact with her head and neck.

Two days later, one of the lawmakers who previously demanded accountability over the incident involving Clark directed his attention toward WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and the league’s handling of excessive physicality.

Marlin Stutzman Takes Aim at Cathy Engelbert Over Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham ‘Attacks’

The congressional scrutiny began on July 7, when the Republican Study Committee, led by U.S. Representative August Pfluger, sent a letter to Engelbert regarding what the lawmakers described as “repeated acts of unnecessary physical hostility and violence against Caitlin Clark.”

The legislators cited several hard fouls involving the three-time WNBA All-Star and stated that “many of these attacks against Caitlin Clark may be racially motivated.”

Engelbert responded on July 24, writing that “in all instances, the League seeks to apply the WNBA rulebook and applicable disciplinary processes consistently across all games and for all players.” She also said the league consistently monitors overly physical plays and regularly evaluates officiating performances.

Pfluger told OutKick a few days later that the response “falls short.” The congressman characterized Engelbert’s explanation as “an assertion, not evidence” that the league had applied its rules and monitored games “consistently across all games and for all players.”

The latest incident involving Cunningham and Carrington has now brought the congressional criticism back into focus.

Carrington was ejected from Saturday’s game after being assessed a Flagrant 2 foul for her contact with Cunningham. The Fever guard subsequently said the play was “unnecessary” and asserted that it was intentional.

Following the incident, Rep. Marlin Stutzman echoed Pfluger’s concerns about the league’s response to physical incidents involving Fever players.

“WNBA commissioner @CathyEngelbert has failed to ensure a safe environment for every player in the league. After repeated attacks against @CaitlinClark22, and now @sophaller, Engelbert’s continued lack of accountability is unacceptable,” Stutzman tweeted Monday.

Stutzman’s statement maintains the congressional pressure amid the ongoing scrutiny of the WNBA’s handling of physical play. The comments also come as the league continues to face questions about whether its disciplinary system is being applied consistently, regardless of whether controversies arise.

For Engelbert and the WNBA, the issue now extends beyond individual fouls and suspensions. Congressional lawmakers are publicly demanding accountability and consistency, while the league has maintained that its existing rules and disciplinary procedures are applied across the competition.

The latest Cunningham-Carrington incident has ensured that those questions remain firmly in the spotlight.
