Why Is 49ers QB Brock Purdy Called Mr. Irrelevant?

Mr. Irrelevant doesn't sound like a pleasant nickname for San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy, but he earned it fair and square.

On the surface, calling a Super Bowl-bound QB “Mr. Irrelevant” might appear like troll behavior, but San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy rightfully earned the nickname. The moniker isn’t quite as vile as it suggests, so let’s clear the air on the 49ers gunslinger.

Brock Purdy Earned the “Mr. Irrelevant” Nickname During the 2022 NFL Draft

Some draftees have to wait a while to hear their name called — ask Aaron Rodgers what his first-round slide was like in the 2005 NFL Draft. Purdy had to wait juuuuuuuuust a bit longer.

The Iowa State product waited all day Thursday. No call. All day Friday. No call. Saturday began with pick No. 106. He had enough time to take two naps and catch up on some light reading before pick No. 262 rolled around.

Then, it happened.

The 49ers selected Purdy with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. And it’s for this reason — being the last pick of the draft — that he is called “Mr. Irrelevant.”

When Did the “Mr. Irrelevant” Moniker Begin?

The Mr. Irrelevant nickname is closer to the original Woodstock than to Purdy’s birthday. Mr. Irrelevant and “Irrelevant Week” began in 1976, an idea created by Paul Salata to celebrate the underdog. NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle approved his pitch, which gave birth to the event — and each successive event has become more grandiose over time.

Current Irrelevant Week CEO Melanie Salata Finch (the creator’s daughter) articulated the vision behind the event’s genesis, “My dad had a motto: ‘Doing something nice for someone for no reason.’ And so he wanted to randomly do something nice for someone because he had played football and thought, ‘Let’s honor the last guy. Let’s have that be our random guy.’”

Purdy might already be the most relevant Mr. Irrelevant of all time.

A Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs would only boost the case.
