Who Is the Oldest Head Coach To Win a Super Bowl?

The Super Bowl continues to be one of the most sought-after titles in sports history. Considering every team only has one head coach, there has only been a select number of guys who have had the honor of leading their teams to the Lombardi Trophy. Taking a look at the list, who is the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl?

Who Is the Oldest Head Coach To Win a Super Bowl?

The record for the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl has been in place for nearly 60 years now. The honor of being the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl belongs to George Halas, who accomplished the feat at 68 years and 331 days with the Chicago Bears back in 1963.

Although it wasn’t technically considered the Super Bowl at the time, Halas still tops this list due to his age.

This game was played at Wrigley Field in Chicago, and it was the fifth and final NFL Championship played at the storied stadium. It was a cold game, with temperatures hitting 10 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff, and ultimately finished as a low-scoring affair, with a final tally of 14-10. The Bears upset the New York Giants, who were in their third consecutive championship game.

In an exciting game that ended with a Bears interception in the end zone, the weather and location definitely had an impact on the final outcome. The Giants had the highest-scoring offense in the league back then, amassing 448 points in 14 games. They were led by quarterback Y. A. Tittle who threw 36 touchdown passes during the season, which was an NFL record at the time.

Unfortunately for New York, they ran into what was known as the Monsters of the Midway. The Bears’ defense was beyond elite in the 1960s. That year specifically, they yielded only 144 points all season. They had a whopping 36 interceptions in only 14 games!

    Another Head Coach Came Close

More recently, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians came very close to breaking this record. The Buccaneers, led by future Hall of Famer Tom Brady, won the Super Bowl back in 2021. At the time, Arians was 68 years and 127 days old.

Although Arians said that he wasn’t going to retire and would return to try and break this record, ultimately, he stepped away from the game in March 2022, leaving Halas as the oldest head coach to win a Super Bowl.
