Who Will Light the Stadium Torch for Super Bowl LVIII?
Allegiant Stadium, which officially opened in 2020, includes a giant torch lit by a bunch of LED lights. Its official name is the “Al Davis Memorial Torch,” honoring the former owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. Before every game, it is lit by someone, usually a former Raider or someone of significance to the history of football or the organization.
However, for the big game, multiple special guests will be representing the Raiders.
“This Sunday, we’ve got lighting the torch … three Raider Super Bowl MVPs: Fred Biletnikoff, who’s White. Jim Plunkett, Hispanic. And Marcus Allen, who’s Black,” Raiders owner Mark Davis told PFN on Opening Night of Super Bowl week. “The Raiders are diverse, and our greatest players are diverse… We’re very proud of it.”
Biletnikoff played for the Raiders from 1965 to 1978 as a wide receiver. He is a one-time Super Bowl champion, first-team All-Pro, and four-time Pro Bowler. He had 589 career receptions for 8,974 yards and 76 touchdowns and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Plunkett played 16 seasons in the NFL, with his final eight coming as the Raiders’ franchise quarterback from 1978-1986. He is a two-time Super Bowl champion, one-time Super Bowl MVP, and an NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He passed for 25,882 yards, 164 touchdowns, and 198 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,337 yards and 14 scores.
Finally, Marcus Allen played 16 seasons in the NFL as a running back. He was with the Raiders from 1982 to 1992 and the Chiefs from 1993 to 1997. His awards include one Super Bowl win and MVP, one NFL MVP, one NFL Offensive Player of the Year, one NFL Rookie of the Year, and one NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
Allen was also a two-time first-team All-Pro, one-time second-team All-Pro, and six-time Pro Bowler. On the ground, he had 12,243 yards and 123 touchdowns. Additionally, he caught 587 passes for 5,411 yards and 21 more TDs. He, like Biletnikoff, is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
