The Philadelphia Eagles have the honor of serving as the home team in Super Bowl 59, which means they were able to have first pick of which color jerseys to wear. It appears it will be a repeat of Super Bowl 57, with the Eagles wearing midnight green and the Kansas City Chiefs rocking the white uniforms.

But does that matter? Let’s explore the viral white jerseys Super Bowl theory.

White Jerseys Super Bowl Theory: How Often Does the Team in White Win?

The Chiefs and the Eagles are set to play in Super Bowl 59. With the game being played at a neutral location, how do the two teams choose which uniforms are worn? The Super Bowl still features a home and an away team, and the home team has the choice to pick its jersey color first.

For example, the Eagles were the home team in Super Bowl 57 and chose to wear their home green uniforms, leaving the Chiefs to wear their away white jerseys. This past year in Super Bowl 58, the Chiefs, in a rematch against the San Francisco 49ers, elected to wear their home red jerseys, leaving the 49ers to wear white.

How often do the teams wearing white jerseys win the Super Bowl?

Surprisingly, the team that elects to wear a white uniform in the Super Bowl has historically had an advantage through 58 Super Bowls played, as seen in the table below.

History shows that teams wearing white uniforms emerged victorious in 16 of the last 20 Super Bowls. Oddly enough, both teams playing in this year’s Super Bowl were the only teams to buck the trend during that span (the 2018 Eagles, 2020 and 2024 Chiefs, and the 2011 Green Bay Packers all won wearing non-white jerseys).

What Color Uniforms Have the Eagles and Chiefs Worn Over the Years?

Super Bowl 59 marks the fifth appearance for Philadelphia throughout its franchise history. In four trips to the Super Bowl, Philadelphia has never worn white jerseys and has a 1-3 record in those games.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs will be playing in the Super Bowl for the seventh time in franchise history. In six trips, Kansas City has captured four Lombardi Trophies. K.C. has worn white uniforms twice, holding a 1-1 record. When wearing their colored jerseys, the Chiefs compiled a 3-1 record in those games.

The Chiefs, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, will look to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls. The Eagles will look to spoil the Chiefs’ historic run as the Super Bowl kicks off in New Orleans.

With teams wearing white uniforms logging a 16-4 record over the last 20 Super Bowls, the stats favor the Chiefs in this matchup.
