These Four Teams Have Multiple Round 1 Picks

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans had the chance to clinch the No. 1 overall pick with a loss in the final week of the season, but they finished with a 32-31 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Instead of being atop the 2023 NFL Draft order, they enter with the No. 2 and No. 12 overall picks. Their first selection is their own after finishing 3-13-1, and their second first-round pick is from the Cleveland Browns.

Last offseason, the Browns traded their first-round picks in 2022, 2023, and 2024, a third-round pick in 2022, and a fourth-round pick in 2024 for QB Deshaun Watson and a 2024 sixth-round pick from the Texans.

Houston used the Browns’ 2022 first-round pick to add guard Kenyon Green. They’re hoping for their two first-round picks in 2023 to give an even bigger return than what Green and 2022 third-overall pick Derek Stingley Jr. provided.

Their shopping list should start with determining which of the top quarterbacks fit their direction best. It’s almost certain we will see four passers go in the first round, but could the Texans take a defender No. 2 and then trade up from No. 12 for a quarterback instead of taking one at No. 2?

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks were one of the league’s most pleasant surprises in 2022, as they finished 9-8 despite trading star quarterback Russell Wilson to Denver.

Backup Geno Smith proved to be a worthy replacement, giving Seattle the ability to go in several directions with their two first-round picks. They enter with the fifth and 20th overall selection.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider admitted he could still select a quarterback with their first selection, even if Smith is retained on a long-term deal, saying, “they don’t grow on trees.”

He’s right, and Smith could be flipped for more assets if a rookie proves capable of handling the offense by Year 2. This is a luxury rarely afforded to teams with a winning record.

Seattle received 2022 and 2023 first-round picks, a 2022 fifth-round pick, a 2023 second-round pick, and three players from Denver for Wilson and a 2022 fourth-round pick. This trade thus far looks like one of the more lopsided in NFL history through only one season.

Detroit Lions

The Lions nearly landed a top-three overall pick from their 2021 trade with the Los Angeles Rams for quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Rams bottomed out in 2022 after injuries destroyed the roster that won Super Bowl 56. Like the Seahawks, the Lions are unique in having a winning record and a top-six pick.

Detroit will select sixth and 18th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Considering their immense number of defensive needs, it’s possible they use both on that side of the ball. Taking a mindset like Seattle, Lions head coach Dan Campbell admitted that although he believes they can win with quarterback Jared Goff, “that doesn’t mean our eyes aren’t on a quarterback.”

Picking sixth could make that impossible if teams jump over Detroit to land one of the top-four names. However, we’ve rarely seen such aggressiveness in draft trades.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Super Bowl 57 runner-up is about to add to their chest of young talent with the 10th and 31st overall picks in this class. The Eagles wisely consolidated their three 2022 first-round picks when the New Orleans Saints boldly offered their No. 18, No. 101, and No. 237 picks in 2022, plus 2023 first and 2024 second-round picks for Philadelphia’s 2022 No. 16, No. 19, and No. 194 picks in the 2022 draft.

New Orleans landed star receiver Chris Olave after trading up again to No. 11, and the Eagles have the 10th overall pick this year. Philadelphia received a ridiculous haul for a minor trade up. They’re well-positioned to add to their defensive backfield if they choose.

Who Has the Most Picks in Round 1?

The Texans, Seahawks, Lions, and Eagles are all tied for the most picks in Round 1. They each have two, and each will make their first selection in the top 10 overall. Houston is the only team with their first pick being their original, as the Seahawks, Lions, and Eagles were able to nab their valuable asset in previous deals.

Our 2023 NFL Draft picks by team tracker will continue to be updated throughout this offseason, including when compensatory picks are announced and trades occur.
