When Was the Last Time the Steelers Won the Super Bowl?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are an established NFL franchise, but when was the last time the team won a Super Bowl?

    Published on

The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to travel to take on the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card round. With a rich championship history and a coach in Mike Tomlin who only knows winning seasons, the expectations in Pittsburgh are always championship or bust.

With a franchise that has been to eight Super Bowls (winning six of them), the standard has been set. The Steelers have a chance to add to their franchise’s legacy with a playoff run this year and have a Super Bowl-winning coach in Tomlin leading the way. While Pittsburgh looks to add to the trophy case this season, when was the last time they won one?

    Pittsburgh Steelers Last Super Bowl

The franchise that has won six titles during their history has been on a bit of a dry spell as of late. You need to go back to 2009 and Super Bowl XLIII to find Pittsburgh’s last championship.

The Steelers faced the Arizona Cardinals in the instant classic of a Super Bowl. The game was played at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the contest ended 27-23 after a thrilling fourth quarter as the two teams fought until the end.

Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes made a legendary game-winning catch to give the Steelers the win for good and secured himself Super Bowl MVP for his performance.

However, from that moment, it has been a long 15 years since the Steelers were able to capture that feeling again and will turn this year’s playoffs in hopes of ending their current draught.

    Steelers Super Bowl Victories

The Steelers have one of the most historic franchises in the NFL. With a long history of winning, NFL legends have dawned the black and yellow through the years and have helped the team from Pittsburgh secure six championships since the start of the league.

Pittsburgh’s first Super Bowl title came in 1975 when they beat the Minnesota Vikings 16-6 in Super Bowl IX, followed by another championship the very next year as they beat the Dallas Cowboys 21-17 in Super Bowl X.

After the first two came in back-to-back seasons, the Steelers would once again reach the pinnacle in 1979 and again beat the Cowboys 35-31 to win Super Bowl XIII.

In typical Steelers fashion, they yet again went back-to-back and followed their third title with a fourth the following season, this time by beating the Los Angeles Rams 31-19 in Super Bowl XIV.

While the Steelers of the late 70s and into the 80s were dominant, Pittsburgh’s fifth Super Bowl title came after a 26-year gap. In 2006, the Steelers went on to win their fifth title — this time against the Seattle Seahawks, 21-10, in Super Bowl XL.

Three years later, and Pittsburgh’s most recent title, the Steelers got their sixth and final Super Bowl championship in 2009 in the aforementioned game against the Cardinals.
