After a week of horrific news, the Vikings picked up a 27-12 win over the Browns and some confidence for the rest of the season. Losing first-round rookie QB J.J. McCarthy in the first week of the preseason was brutal, but QBs Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall’s performance had to ease Vikings fans’ minds.
A member of the Vikings for the last two seasons, Mullens completed 11 of his 21 attempts for 135 yards and a touchdown against the Browns. Meanwhile, Hall made the most of his newly-found snaps, completing four of his five passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns, including a 71-yard shot to Jeshaun Jones.
Sam Darnold has the starting gig locked up, but Mullens and Hall will have quite the competition for the backup slot behind the 2018 first-round pick.
Additionally, the rushing attack needs a better showing in the preseason finale. While offseason signing Aaron Jones should take the majority of the load, presumed backup Ty Chandler is getting outperformed by Kene Nwangwu. Will the fourth-year back edge Chandler out for the RB2 slot?
On the other hand, the Eagles kept the positive momentum going with a second preseason win but still lacked the punch from the offense.
After scoring 16 points in their preseason debut, the Eagles could only muster up 14 points against the Patriots in Week 2.
QB Jalen Hurts has yet to appear in either exhibition matchup for Philadelphia, but the results of the first two games do not bode well for the Eagles’ backup quarterback plan.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Kenny Pickett played the entire first half and completed 11 of his 13 passes for just 67 yards. Former Stanford QB Tanner McKee pushed the offense down the field better, helping Philadelphia score their only touchdown of the night, completing 15 of his 19 attempts for 140 yards.
While Pickett performed better in Week 1, McKee pushed the team to a win in Week 2. Who will prevail in the battle of the backups in Week 3?
No matter the winner, the Eagles’ coaching staff will hope for an improvement from both signal-callers so they know they have a solid backup plan should Hurts go down with an injury.
Vikings at Eagles Betting Preview
The Philadelphia Eagles have not given us much information, but we do not expect to see Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith, or A.J. Brown on offense. There is a good chance that we won’t see a number of other starters as well, as has been the case all preseason. The Eagles have scored just 30 points this preseason, largely because they have not played any of their starters.
The Vikings were impressive over the last two weeks, but this week they are not playing either Sam Darnold or Nick Mullens. The offense is likely to look relatively ineffective, which opens an opportunity for the under to come into play here.
