The 2021 season has been the polar opposite of 2020 for the Panthers. Last year, they started 0-2 before roaring back to 3-2 after Week 5. In 2021, they started a perfect 3-0 before falling back to 3-2. The loss against the Cowboys was somewhat expected, but the Week 5 loss was demoralizing in a game they dominated for large parts.

The Panthers have seen improvement in all areas of their team this season. The defense has gone from league average to inside the top five. Meanwhile, the offense has improved from below league average to exactly the middle of the pack. The concern is that those rankings are largely a product of a soft opening schedule.

Making a prediction for the Vikings matching up with the Panthers is tough because we simply do not know which Vikings team will turn up. They lost narrowly in the first two weeks, won convincingly in Week 3, were outplayed in Week 4, and narrowly won a game they should have dominated in Week 5.

One of the issues has been converting their offensive performances into points. Despite ranking in the top 10 in yards gained, they are in the bottom half in points scored. Third downs have been a major issue for Minnesota, as they rank 19th in that category entering Week 6. However, once they get in the red zone, they have the seventh-best touchdown conversion rate at 69.2%.

Vikings vs. Panthers prediction

The battle between the Panthers and Vikings might be the hardest to predict for this week, something the odds appear to agree with. Both teams have had moments where they’ve been impressive, but there has also been plenty of head-scratching play.

The Vikings could have been staring down the barrel of a 1-4 record were it not for their late field goal last week.

The Panthers have struggled the last two weeks when the competition has stepped up. Their 3-0 start was built on victories over the Jets, Texans, and an emotional Saints team. This week will tell us a lot about them and where they stand in the NFC playoff picture.

The experience of the Vikings should play an important part this week. The Panthers are a very young and relatively inexperienced franchise both on and off the field. That could be crucial in what is expected to be a close game.
