The final score of tonight’s Vikings vs. Chiefs game doesn’t tell the story. If you’re a fan of the Chiefs you liked what you saw. If you’re 436 miles North on I-35 in Minneapolis, the feelings aren’t mutual.

Kansas City’s offense came out firing on all cylinders. Patrick Mahomes looked like he was already in the middle of an MVP run, tossing 2 touchdowns to Tyreek Hill and Blake Bell on his only two drives of the night. The new-look offensive line played stout, keeping Mahomes upright and opening some holes for Jerick McKinnon early on.

Once the starters went out, rookie quarterback Shane Buechele looked solid enough to make head coach Andy Reid question the possibility of carrying three quarterbacks on the roster heading into 2021. Running back Derrick Gore led the way on the ground and in the air, scoring 1 touchdown on a 56-yard pass.

The Vikings didn’t have nearly as much to hand their hat on coming out of Arrowhead Stadium. After a 10-play opening drive that ended in 3 points, Minnesota failed to get a first down until the final 23 seconds of the half. Kirk Cousins finished the night 5-for-7 but both he and starting running back Ameer Abdullah failed to keep a drive alive. Jake Browning found even less success, going 2-for-8 on the night for just 41 yards through the air.

Rookie quarterback Kellen Mond made a case for the backup role in Minnesota, finishing the night 16-for-23 with 196 yards and 1 interception. However, the position is weak behind Cousins, which doesn’t bode well if he misses anytime this year.

9:04 PM ET: The drive stalls out for Kansas City just outside of field-goal range. Tommy Townsend punts away to Ihmir Smith-Marsette, who calls a fair catch at the 14. A popular target for Buechele on that drive was Daurice Fountain who caught 1 pass on 3 targets. Cousins is out for Minnesota, Jake Browning now under center.

9:02 PM ET: Chiefs get to midfield and go for it on fourth down. Derrick Gore, who comes off a solid game in Week 2, gets the first down. He has 3 carries on the night.

8:57 PM ET: The Chiefs take over, and Buechele connects on 2 quick pass attempts. On the punt return two plays prior, cornerback Mike Hughes returned the punt 76 yards for a touchdown, but it was called back due to a block in the back.

8:53 PM ET: Cousins and Vikings starters came out for a third drive but go three-and-out. Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton had the opening tackle at the line of scrimmage and prevented Cousins from rushing for a first down. Good drive for the rookie out of Missouri.

8:48 PM ET: Buechele couldn’t find the Mahomes magic on the Chiefs third drive of the game. Vikings will take over at their own 12-yard line with 12:38 left in the second quarter. Andy Reid has had enough of a look at their new-look offensive line, sitting the entire unit for the rest of the night.

8:41 PM ET: End of the first quarter in Kansas City. Chiefs up 14-3.

8:23 PM ET: No return for the Chiefs. Mahomes and starters come out for their second drive of the game.
