Why Did the Vikings Cut Alexander Mattison? Possible Landing Spots Include Texans, Cowboys, and Others

The Vikings have cut Alexander Mattison, making him a free agent for the second consecutive year. What are some potential landing spots?

The Minnesota Vikings decided to cut running back Alexander Mattison ahead of the start of the 2024 season on March 13. The move frees up $600,000 in 2024 cap savings and incurs $4 million in 2024 dead cap.

With Mattison now hitting the open market, it will mark back-to-back seasons in which he was a free agent. What are some potential landing spots for him in 2024?

Alexander Mattison’s 2024 Landing Spots

Mattison was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Vikings, where he’s spent his entire career. In his five-year NFL career, he’s had 584 carries for 2,370 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also adds 100 receptions for 718 yards and six more TDs.

Ahead of the 2023 season, Mattison signed a two-year deal to return to Minnesota worth $7 million, including $6.35 million guaranteed. In 2023, he had 180 carries for 700 yards and a 3.9-yard average. However, he had zero touchdowns, a potential key factor in his release.

Mattison to the Texans?

The first team that could use Mattison in 2024 is the Houston Texans. The Texans’ leading rusher, Devin Singletary, is set to hit free agency. While the team does still return Dameon Pierce, he struggled in 2023 in a new scheme. Mattison would immediately become one of the team’s top-two running backs and would help from Day 1.

Pierce had 145 carries in 2023 for 416 yards and two touchdowns, just 2.9 yards per carry. He did, however, have 220 attempts for 939 yards and four touchdowns in his rookie season in 2022.

The Cowboys Add Mattison to Running Back Committee

The next team that might find themselves interested in Mattison’s services is the Dallas Cowboys. After letting Ezekiel Elliott go last year and committing to Tony Pollard, Pollard is now set to be a free agent of his own and likely won’t be franchise-tagged. Currently, the Cowboys have just Deuce Vaughn and Malik Davis under contract.

Vaughn and Davis both combined for 23 carries for 63 yards and no touchdowns. All of those stats came from Vaughn, who was just a rookie in 2023. Davis, on the other hand, has played 15 career games since 2022, compiling 38 carries for 161 yards and one touchdown.

Titans Look to Mattison as Derrick Henry Leaves

Finally, there’s the Tennessee Titans. The Titans have seen steady dominant play at the running back position for years under Derrick Henry. However, Henry is an impending free agent, and all signs point toward him playing for a new team in 2024.

With Henry leaving, it leaves another spot open on the roster to play alongside Tyjae Spears. Spears was a rookie in 2023, totaling 100 carries for 453 yards and two touchdowns. The Titans also have Hassan Haskins, who had 25 carries for 93 yards in 2022 and none in 2023, under contract in 2024.
