Who is still in play for the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft after Week 16?
The way the results have played out in Week 16 has changed the complexion of the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft order. As it stands, it was realistically between the Lions and the Jaguars as to who would have the first overall selection.
The tie the Lions had with the Pittsburgh Steelers is currently the difference. However, one victory for the Jaguars would see the Lions jump back up to first place. The Jaguars have games against the Patriots and Colts, so it doesn’t seem likely they will get another win, barring an upset.
Meanwhile, the Jets and Texans effectively ruled themselves out of the first overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft order. They are both now two games ahead of the Jaguars in the win column. The chances that the Jaguars win two games in the last two weeks are unlikely. Additionally, the Lions would also have to win both games. For now, those two and the New York Giants remain in “contention” mathematically.
If the Jaguars and Lions were to both win their final two, it would come down to the NFL Draft tiebreakers. The first tiebreaker would be the strength of schedule, where the Texans currently have the advantage. However, a lot would change in those factors if the Jaguars and Lions win out.
