Strengths

• Possesses the ideal frame of a modern NFL starter.
• Surprisingly good ability to run the ball once he commits to taking off and could be more productive if he made a bigger priority to scramble.
• Shows good velocity on short and intermediate throws that quickly arrive in his receiver’s hands.
• Able to connect on deep passes without an extra wind-up in his throwing motion. He flashes good touch often enough to project possible improvement.
• Respectable passing threat while on the move thanks to his arm flexibility and athleticism. He’s likely underused on rollout attempts.
• Can shed tacklers as he rushes upfield, giving him red-zone value.

• His lack of durability has derailed his career to this point. He’s only played in 23 games entering 2023.

• Has trouble consistently throwing catchable deep passes, despite having a strong arm and good touch on occasion. He needs to give his receivers a chance more often.

• Does not move well in the pocket, despite rushing ability. He needs to stay lighter on his feet and maneuver around better.

Current Draft Projection and Summary

Injuries can end a career before it even begins. But it’s even more frustrating to see a promising talent continue to deal with unrelated dings.

Shough has had some great moments since his true freshman year, but he has never stayed on the field long enough to continue improving. This season is critical, as he must capitalize on his physical gifts.

Shough, a good athlete who can overcome occasionally sloppy mechanics with his strong arm and field vision, should benefit from more reps. With only 451 career passing attempts entering the season, there’s reason to believe his confidence will continue to grow throughout the year. This is the year he should start mastering the offense.

If he takes the next step as an anticipatory passer who identifies defenses early, Shough has enough talent and physical traits to make it worth drafting him. He may be capped as a Day 3 talent due to his injury history and advanced age, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be an effective backup if he can maximize his tools.
