Tommy DeVito Injury Update

DeVito ran for two yards late in the second quarter of Sunday’s game before he was hit in the head by Cowboys defensive lineman Dante Fowler Jr. and was slow to get up after the play.

He left the field with the rest of the Giants for the ensuing punt and did not go to the blue medical tent for evaluation, as is typical in cases of potential head injuries. He did not miss an offensive snap and remained in the game the rest of the way, completing 14 of his 27 pass attempts on the day for 86 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

All indications remain that DeVito is no worse for wear as Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters Wednesday that DeVito will make his second straight start Sunday against the Washington Commanders.

“I think he’s a good young quarterback to work with,” Daboll told reporters. “Try to improve him this week from last week. … He’s done a good job improving. He’s a young player, a young quarterback.”

The rookie undrafted free agent made his first career start against the Cowboys and his third appearance of the season overall. He came into New York’s 13-10 overtime loss to the New York Jets in Week 8 after Tyrod Taylor went down injured, then he replaced an injured Daniel Jones in the 30-6 Week 9 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Through those three appearances, DeVito is a combined 31 of 54 for 260 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. He began the year on the practice squad before being signed to the active roster when Taylor was placed on injured reserve in Week 9.

Jones was then diagnosed with a season-ending torn ACL after his Week 9 injury, leaving DeVito to take the helm.

Who’s Left on New York Giants’ QB Depth Chart?

With Jones sidelined for the remainder of the season and Taylor unable to take the field until Week 14’s bout with the Green Bay Packers at the earliest, New York is running low on depth at quarterback.

Matt Barkley, who has not appeared in an NFL game since 2020, is listed as the Giants’ backup quarterback on their depth chart.

The veteran quarterback last appeared in four games for the Buffalo Bills during the 2020 season, including their final two games of the year. Barkley has only made six career starts, all coming down the stretch of the 2016 season with the Chicago Bears.

The Giants also signed Jacob Eason to their practice squad. Eason has appeared in one game each of the last two seasons for the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers, completing a combined five of 10 pass attempts for 84 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Those three are New York’s only quarterback options at this point, though it could theoretically look to the free-agent market again for additional help.

The Giants may not have much incentive to do so, however, given their chances of having a high draft pick if they continue to lose.
