The NFL and sports world were left stunned on the Fourth of July in 2009 when Steve McNair was reported dead in Nashville, Tenn.
Fifteen years after the stunning passing of the Pro Bowl quarterback, McNair and his murder-suicide case will become the synopsis of Netflix’s forthcoming documentary “Untold: The Murder of Air McNair,” set to debut Tuesday.
While many who followed the tragedy know about the outcome involving McNair, it’s time to dive into what became of the rest of his family following that tragic day.
Who Was Steve McNair’s Wife?
McNair’s sudden death was ruled a murder-suicide by Nashville police officials. He was found with multiple gunshot wounds while lying next to 20-year-old Sahel “Jenni” Kazemi, with whom he had a romantic link. Kazemi worked as a waitress at a restaurant McNair owned in Nashville.
But before Kazemi, there was another woman in the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback’s life.
He was married to Mechelle McNair, with whom he wed in June 1997 following his first two seasons in the league. He and Mechelle owned two residences — one a farm in Steve’s native home state of Mississippi and another in Nashville.
In an interview with ESPN in Feb. 2018, Mechelle revealed she woke up with a “crushing” headache that radiated in the right side of her skull. But she also discovered her husband wasn’t home, prompting her to make several phone calls to him wondering about his whereabouts.
That’s when the news surfaced that her husband had been found dead in the condo along with a woman of which she claimed she had no idea. Kazemi and Steve were discovered with bullet wounds to their heads when their deceased bodies were discovered. Mechelle described falling to the floor, withering in tears when she learned her NFL husband died.
Since that day, Mechelle has stayed away from the spotlight, which includes a private Instagram account. However, she has helped push out the CBD product Total Life Changes on her IG bio.
Mechelle and the man who became known as “Air McNair” started their relationship at Alcorn State — which later saw two sons enter the picture.
Who Are McNair’s Children?
Tyler and Trenton McNair are the biological sons of the slain QB, whom he helped sired with Mechelle.
Tyler was 10 at the time of his father’s passing. In the previously mentioned ’18 ESPN feature, Mechelle described her son contemplating suicide before talking him out of it.
Tyler since established himself as a star high school basketball player who eventually left the hardwood for a dance career. He eventually attended New York University and has continued his endeavors through dance and theater.
Trenton became another hardwood sensation after his dad’s death, except Trenton continued his basketball career collegiately at Palm Beach Atlantic University. He’s now heading into his junior season there.
McNair, though, fathered two more children before Mechelle entered his world. He had Steven L. McNair Jr. and Steven O’Brian Koran McNair, the latter with a woman named Cotina Feazell. Koran was 15 at the time of his father’s death and lived in Mount Olive, Miss.
All four children will likely become subjects in the upcoming documentary alongside Mechelle and Kazemi.
