Does Geno Smith Want Out of Seattle?

Heading into the 2025 season, Smith is Seattle’s best quarterback option. From a football perspective, no quarterback on the roster can realistically outperform Smith.

If the Seahawks disagree on a fair price for Geno’s services, then there’s a chance we’re headed for some quarterback drama this offseason.

Entering the NFL Scouting Combine, the Seahawks might keep an eye on young quarterbacks to draft to try to replace the veteran quarterback.

Smith wants a new contract and his $44.5 million cap hit is the ninth-largest in the NFL, with Seattle several million over the salary cap. One way to clear cap space to improve the roster would be to extend the 34-year-old Smith.

Does Seattle general manager John Schneider want to extend his quarterback, who is coming off a statistically down year?

Smith appeared in 17 games for the Seahawks, logging 407 completions on 578 attempts with a 70.4 completion percentage. He threw for 4,320 yards with 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Smith also added 53 carries for 272 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Seattle finished with a 10-7 record and second in the NFC West division, missing the playoffs.

On Monday, Feb. 24, Smith sent out a cryptic post that got the rumor mill churning and ignited plenty of trade rumors. The former West Virginia prospect posted a GIF of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James walking out of a press conference, prompting many to wonder if he was hinting at an exit from Seattle.

“Extending Smith would save the team a little less than $24 million in cap space, but trading Geno or outright cutting him would save Seattle $31 million,” writes SI’s Tim Weaver.

It remains to be seen what the Seahawks will do this offseason. There are plenty of QB-needy teams around the NFL who could use Smith’s services.
