San Francisco 49ers News, May 1: Interior Offensive Lineman Still Position of Need, 49ers Call Up Arena Football League TE, and More

San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch was busy during the 2024 NFL Draft, selecting eight rookies and adding more through undrafted free agency.

Despite seemingly endless rumors, the 49ers did not trade wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel, while adding University of Florida receiver Ricky Pearsall in the first round.

While the 49ers’roster is close to set as minicamp nears, it’s time to evaluate the roster and anticipate how the 2024-2025 campaign will work out for San Francisco. All of that and more in today’s 49ers news!

49ers Don’t Win NFC West In PFN’s 2024 Playoff Predictions

After losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in February’s Super Bowl, it will be an uphill battle for the 49ers to appear in another one. However, Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson’s 2024 playoff predictions actually don’t even have the Niners winning the NFC West.

Instead, Robinson has the Los Angeles Rams winning the NFC West this upcoming season. Despite losing future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald, the Rams won the division and locked up the No. 2 seed in the NFC West in this latest prediction.

The Niners do make the playoffs as the No. 5 seed. They will feel the pressure of having to win a Super Bowl after electing to keep Aiyuk and Samuel, with key members of their defense — such as linebacker Dre Greenlaw and corners Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir — on expiring deals.

In this simulation, the 49ers don’t make it back to the NFC Championship, as the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Green Bay Packers to compete for the Super Bowl.

Interior Offensive Line Named 49ers’ Biggest Weakness

With interior offensive line being named San Francisco’s biggest weakness on the roster, protecting Brock Purdy will need to be a priority as they round out this offseason.

The 49ers have question marks at center, but they were able to bring back right guard Jon Feliciano and drafted guard Jarrett Kingston in the sixth round.

While this is one of the most complete and talented rosters in the NFL, San Francisco could still use a little bit more depth throughout the interior of the offensive line.

49ers ‘Call Up’ Arena Football League Tight End

The 49ers are also searching for more tight end depth behind George Kittle. While they did not draft one, the Nashville Kats of the Arena Football League posted that Cade Brewer was “called up” by San Francisco.

In 2022, Brewer signed as an undrafted free agent to the Seattle Seahawks but was unable to make the team. It’s still unclear if the 49ers signed him as a UDFA or just invited him to rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old will have an opportunity to perform in front of NFL coaches and decision-makers.
