The New Orleans Saints entered the NFL Draft wanting a blue-chip wide receiver. And they did what was needed to land one, swinging two trades in four weeks in the first round to make sure their guy was there. That guy was Ohio State’s Chris Olave, who they took 11th overall.
Saints trade up to draft Chris Olave
The Saints sent the 16th, 98th, and 120th picks to Washington, parting with a third and fourth-round pick to move up five spots. They owned that 16th overall pick thanks to their deal with the Eagles earlier this month that netted them a second first-rounder.
Olave was the third wide receiver taken in four picks, and the second Ohio State Buckeye in the span of 10 minutes. Olave’s teammate, Garrett Wilson, went the pick before.
Olave caught 65 passes for 936 yards and 13 touchdowns his final year at Ohio State. He joins another Buckeye, Michael Thomas, in what is suddenly a loaded wide receiver room in New Orleans.
That duo should give Jameis Winston an enviable group of pass catchers, and it sets up the Saints to make some noise in a top-heavy NFC.
