In his introductory press conference with the New York Giants, newly signed quarterback Russell Wilson made it clear he’s coming in to start — and to lead. The 13-year veteran and Super Bowl champion didn’t dodge any questions about the team’s potential draft plans but kept his focus on the bigger goal: winning football games in 2025.
Russell Wilson Reveals Expectations for New York Giants Future
During his first official appearance in a Giants uniform, the 10-time Pro Bowler stressed leadership as his top priority, stating the team is “looking for someone to lead in every aspect,” from offseason workouts to game days.
When asked how he’d react if the Giants drafted a quarterback next month, Wilson didn’t shy away from the possibility. “Listen, I think that every NFL team nowadays has two or three quarterbacks — usually three — and so right now we have Tommy DeVito and Jameis [Winston] and myself, and we’re just excited to get to work,” Wilson said.
He acknowledged that if the Giants were to add another QB, he’d embrace the mentorship role. “If we draft a quarterback, we’ll make sure that he does everything he can to be ready to go and be prepared with his mentality.”
Still, Wilson quickly brought the focus back to himself and the team’s goals: “For me, it’s about the process of winning. I’m focused on what I can do as the quarterback of the New York Giants to help us win.”
He closed his answer with a message to fans: “I’m excited, man. I’ve been gifted with so much in this game … but to be inside those white lines, that’s my favorite place to be. And I’m excited to do that and rock the New York Giants jersey.”
Later in the press conference, Wilson was asked what mentoring a rookie would look like. “You always handle yourself first. You control what you can control,” he said, adding that leadership comes through daily habits and consistency.
“They learn from you. They see your practice habits. They see your mental habits … I’m excited about the opportunity to not just lead the quarterback room, but the locker room.”
How Wilson Signing Impacts Giants’ NFL Draft Strategy
The Giants’ offseason started slowly, with the team missing out on Matthew Stafford despite reportedly offering more guaranteed money. Aaron Rodgers was also considered, but the team grew impatient waiting for his decision.
Eventually, the Giants added Jameis Winston in free agency — only to follow up by signing Wilson. That late move led many to believe general manager Joe Schoen wouldn’t use the team’s first-round pick on a quarterback.
PFSN’s Marco Enriquez projects the Giants to take Travis Hunter with the No. 3 pick in his latest mock draft. “Hunter is the best cornerback in the draft and, at worst, the second-best wide receiver. Pairing Hunter with Malik Nabers gives the Giants one of the NFL’s best young wide receiver duos.”
While some analysts criticized the Wilson signing as a “panic move”, former Packers wideout and Super Bowl champion James Jones praised it: “I love it because I think this is a real opportunity for him to change his career around … I think he’s going to play well under [Brian] Daboll.”
Whether the Giants draft another quarterback or not, Wilson is locked in as the leader heading into 2025 — a critical year for Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, who both find themselves firmly on the hot seat.
