Rueben Bain Jr.’s Surprise Arm Length the Talk of the Combine: NFL World Debates If It Really Matters

Rueben Bain Jr. measured 30 7/8-inch arms at the 2026 NFL Combine, confirming sub-1st percentile length for an edge rusher. Here's what it means for his draft stock.

Rueben Bain Jr. measured in at 30 7/8-inch arms and a 77 1/2-inch wingspan Thursday morning at the 2026 NFL Combine in Indianapolis. The number the entire draft community has been debating for months is now official, and it falls well below the standard NFL teams expect from a premier edge rusher.

Bain, the 2025 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, racked up 9.5 sacks and a nation-leading 83 quarterback pressures at Miami while helping the Hurricanes reach the national championship game. His tape is violent, relentless, and productive. His arms tell a different story on the measuring tape.

Rueben Bain Jr.’s Arm Length: What the Numbers Mean

NFL scouts generally prefer edge rushers to have an arm length of at least 33 inches. Bain’s 30 7/8-inch measurement puts him roughly two inches short of that threshold and lands him at a sub-1st percentile arm length among defensive linemen invited to the Combine since 2011.

The historical data is not kind. No defensive lineman listed as DE or EDGE at the Combine since 2011 with sub-31-inch arms has recorded a sack within their first three NFL seasons. The closest physical comparison is Calijah Kancey, who measured at 30 5/8-inch arms and was selected 19th overall by Tampa Bay in 2023 as an interior defensive lineman, not an edge rusher.

Bain has refused to let the number define his draft stock. He told reporters on Wednesday that no team brought up his arm length during his Combine meetings.

“People keep bringing that up out of nowhere,” Bain said. “As long as I just talk the talk and walk the walk, play with technique, nobody actually cares about it.”

The measurement intensifies the conversation about where Bain fits at the next level. Some evaluators believe he can thrive as a 5-tech or 7-tech pass rusher. Others project an eventual move inside to 3-technique defensive tackle, a shift that would dramatically change his draft value. Bain’s official numbers confirm he will be one of the most polarizing prospects in this class from now through late April.

PFSN’s NFL Draft analyst Ian Cummings had this to say about Bain’s measurement.

“Rueben Bain Jr.’s arm length of 30 7/8″ is the third-shortest among edge rushers since at least 1999, but his outlier status in this category isn’t anything new,” Cummings said. “As early as October and November, there were already rumors he could measure in under 31.

“He wrought havoc in the CFB Playoffs anyway. Bain’s length absolutely bears noting, and he may fall outside certain NFL teams’ thresholds as a result, but he has the attack explosion, natural leverage, compact strength and power profile, angle IQ, and the finishing torso flexibility to counteract his substandard length and remain productive in the NFL.”

On Reuben Bain and arm length.....

Length on the edge for offense or defense is important because the first one in with dominant position is often able to control the action.... HOWEVER...

Bain mitigates a lack of length by playing with bend and explosiveness.

So we’ve known for almost a year that Rueben Bain had <31” arms, but now that it’s official, he’s being docked for it?

I get the concern, but don’t double count it against him

Aaron Donald's arms are two inches longer than Bain's, for reference.
