Penei Sewell’s Contract Details: Lions Lock Up Cornerstone Offensive Pieces Ahead of NFL Draft

    Published on

The Detroit Lions extended left tackle Penei Sewell to a mammoth four-year deal worth $112 million, making him the highest-paid OT in the NFL.

The Detroit Lions have been very active on the final day before the 2024 NFL Draft. First, they signed Amon-Ra St. Brown to a record-breaking contract extension. Then they followed that up by making All-Pro OT Penei Sewell the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

Here are all of the reported contract details on Sewell’s new contract with the Lions.

How Much Did Penei Sewell Sign For?

Sewell’s record-breaking contract is a four-year extension worth $112 million, with $85 million guaranteed. He now leads all offensive linemen in average annual salary ($28 million per year) and guaranteed salary. Trent Williams’ current contract value of $138.06 million remains the highest at the position.

Prior to Sewell’s extension, Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil was the highest-paid offensive lineman by average annual salary at $25 million per year, while Andrew Thomas was the leader in guaranteed money at $67 million.

Sewell, a two-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro, has lived up to the hype of being the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He will earn $3 million more on average than Tunsil, who signed a three-year, $75 million deal in March.

Lions Extend Sewell and Amon-Ra St. Brown Just Hours Apart

Sewell’s massive extension comes right on the heels of the Lions extending star wide receiver St. Brown to a massive extension. St. Brown’s deal is worth over $120 million, with $77 million guaranteed.

Sewell and St. Brown were both part of the Lions’ 2021 draft class that helped accelerate Detroit’s rebuild — making it to the NFC Championship Game just three seasons later.

Since being drafted by the Lions, both Sewell and St. Brown have emerged as two of their best players. And now, Detroit has them each signed to long-term extensions.

While it’s a big day for new contracts on the offensive side of the ball for Detroit, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that no extension for Jared Goff is imminent. Schefter explains that the Lions and Goff have discussed a new deal this offseason, but no agreement is coming anytime soon.

Goff is in the final year of the four-year deal he signed upon being traded from the Los Angeles Rams as part of the package for Matthew Stafford. The 29-year-old quarterback is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, having thrown for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions.

While no deal for Goff is on the horizon, the Lions ensured that cornerstone pieces on their offense were secured before the draft begins.

GM Brad Holmes has done an incredible job continually stacking talent on Detroit’s roster. While nothing is ever guaranteed after an NFC Championship Game loss, the Lions are taking the necessary steps to ensure that they can remain in Super Bowl contention with Dan Campbell for years to come.
