PJ Duke Shares Secret Sauce Behind Penn State Wrestling’s Run

Penn State Wrestling has now won each of its last 81 dual meets, and looks set to repeat its heroics from last season at the NCAA Championships. Duke, a freshman with the Nittany Lions, spoke after the win over Indiana about what makes the team so good.

“Just to be at such a great program and have such good teammates, it’s something that’s indescribable. It’s kind of special how close our team is. I would say a lot of teams aren’t like that,” Duke said via “Locked On Nittany Lions.”

“Like, everyone’s successful and everyone wants each other to get better. Most of the time, when people are successful they break it down. But here it’s way different. Everyone wants you to get better and to do better. So it’s just amazing what’s going on.”

Duke is enjoying a stellar first year with Penn State Wrestling. The 19-year-old, who finished his high school career with a 152-1 record, has won all 13 of his bouts so far for the Nittany Lions.

Duke also recently spoke about his mentality and approach to his matches, amid a successful start to his fledgling career. In addition to his success at the high school level, Duke has also represented the United States, winning gold at the 2025 U20 World Championships in the 70 kg category. He also won bronze in the 70 kg at the 2025 U23 World Championships.

“I kind of just treat every match the same. I try to at least,” Duke said via Penn State Wrestling on Instagram. “No matter kind of where it is a practice or an actual match or whatever, just try to be the same person as always, that kind of just helps you stay grounded.”

Duke and Penn State Wrestling will hope to continue their excellent run of form on Saturday. The Nittany Lions will make the trip to Maryland for their next meet in the Big Ten Championship.
