The 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games are rapidly approaching, with the eyes of the world soon to be focused on some of the world’s greatest athletes. The Olympics, which will take place from July 14 to 30, 2028, will feature some of the most exciting and beloved events in sports, including track and field, swimming, and beach volleyball. That being said, one of the best aspects of the Olympic Games is that fans will gain exposure to sports they may not be familiar with, something that the Boston Celtics are already helping to achieve.
Celtics Light Up Social Media by Trying a Sport Most Americans Don’t Know
The Boston Celtics are one of the most recognizable sports franchises in the world, thanks to their tremendous success in the NBA, as well as the fact that some of the greatest players of all time have donned their jerseys. Well, it seems that the Celtics might not be limited to basketball, as the team has gone viral for showcasing their handball talent after a practice.

The video, which may have been used on the Boston Celtics’ social media accounts to highlight a team-building experience, quickly circulated around the handball community. Some of the top leagues and players shared the video of the Celtics playing their beloved sport.
In the video shared by the Celtics, fans were thrilled to see basketball stars such as Derrick White and Jaylen Brown putting their athletic skills to different use, leading to mixed results. Celtics sophomore Baylor Scheierman may have been the most invested player in the handball game, scoring a goal early in the video and celebrating by screaming loudly into the air.
The Celtics’ handball foray comes as Los Angeles prepares to host its third Olympic Games, following the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics. Handball, which has been an Olympic sport since 1972 for men and 1976 for women, remains relatively unknown in the United States despite its massive popularity across Europe and parts of Asia. The 2028 Games could finally change that dynamic.
The sport is continuing to grow in the United States, with both indoor and beach handball teams emerging nationwide. Long considered the “next big American sport,” handball will be on full display during the 2028 Olympic Games, as the world’s best teams bring their talent to the Long Beach Arena.
Every Olympic cycle, handball captures the attention of U.S. fans, inevitably reviving the familiar debate: if Team USA simply assembled a roster of NBA stars, could they waltz into the tournament and win gold? If one thing is clear from the video of the Boston Celtics playing handball, they might need a few practices before that could become reality.
