Team captain Dylan Larkin has remained the face of the organization throughout that stretch, yet reports now suggest the relationship between player and team may have reached a crossroads.
Recent reports indicate that Larkin has identified preferred destinations to push through a move, a development that immediately generated discussion across the hockey world.

According to veteran Red Wings reporter Helene St. James, Larkin has reportedly provided Detroit with three teams he would be willing to waive his no-movement clause for: the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights.
The reported destinations are hardly surprising. All three organizations are viewed as legitimate contenders and offer Larkin something Detroit has struggled to provide during his tenure: a realistic path toward a deep playoff run.
The timing of the report also comes after growing speculation surrounding Larkin’s frustration with the team’s lengthy postseason drought (10 seasons) and ongoing organizational challenges.
Following the report, reactions began pouring in across X, where hockey analysts, media outlets, and fans debated the reported shortlist.
Habs Chronicle responded to the report by highlighting the star talent available at each destination, posting, “So in other words: with Tkachuk, Hughes/Boldy/Faber, or Eichel.” The comment showed the players who could be involved in a potential trade.
Others viewed the situation from a broader league perspective. The Hockey News’ Columbus account wrote, “Imagine that #CBJ. Hopefully, he goes west to Minnesota. But watch Vegas somehow land him.” The post reflected the widespread belief that Vegas often finds a way to acquire elite talent when major names become available.
The report also generated discussion among analysts evaluating the market impact of a potential Larkin trade.
NHL analyst Mike Veenie focused on how the situation could affect other clubs pursuing center help, writing, “Well, thankfully that’s off the table. Asking price is ridiculous, plus I personally don’t really want him anyway. Regardless, this benefits the Habs as it provides an option for one of the other teams competing for a top 6 C.”
Meanwhile, NHL analyst Peter Berce questioned whether the reported list could remain unchanged if negotiations drag on. “Vegas, Minnesota, and Florida are the three teams. Might have to expand that list,” he wrote.
