NFL training camps are the breeding ground for preparation for the upcoming season. Following the NFL Draft, we enter a malaise of OTAs, rookie minicamps, and mandatory minicamps. All of it to prepare players for the real deal, where the real work begins: NFL training camps. Here’s everything we know about each of the 32 NFL team training camps for the 2023-2024 NFL season.
When and Where Are the 2023 NFL Training Camps?
The beginning of the NFL’s 2023-2024 season really starts with training camps. Most of the work being done in the spring is part of the voluntary offseason program, with the exception of a rookie minicamp and a mandatory minicamp for veterans. Training camp is exclusively dedicated to tackling the 2023-2024 schedule.

Many NFL teams hold training camps at off-site locations and even spend time away from their families. Think of the Gettysburg trip from Remember The Titans. Teams do this to build camaraderie, remove distraction, and drill down on the nuance of what lies ahead.
Still, some teams believe the closeness to home and the value of a consistent routine is a better time spent for their players. Those teams will hold camp at their own facilities in their own backyards so the players and coaches can stay in the routine they’ll be in for the regular season.

Who Will Be Attending NFL Training Camp?
The dates for reporting to training camps are mandatory. Therefore, all players on the team’s current roster are expected to attend, regardless of injury or tenure status. The NFL returned to 90-man roster sizes for the 2021 season and is expected to remain there for the 2023 season.

Rookies and veterans have different reporting dates. This gives the rookies an opportunity to get acclimated and a bit of a head start prior to the veterans showing up. Injured players are expected to attend as well, as they begin their team-approved treatment plans in order to get back on the field.
Some teams may have a player or two hold out from training camp due to a contract dispute. That player will accrue fines until he returns or the dispute is resolved. A holdout can last all of camp and into the regular season until Week 10. If that dispute is not resolved by then, the player will have to sit out the remainder of the season.

What Should We Expect From NFL Training Camp?
Much like the way the start dates for training camp are closely controlled by the CBA, so is the process for the beginning of training camp. There is a five-day acclimatization period followed by an off day. Only then will players wield pads for the first time as they head into two-a-day practices.
During the five-day acclimatization period, the following ramp-up process takes place. The first day is dedicated to physicals, meetings, and classroom instruction. Players can take to the field only for running and conditioning.
On Days 2 and 3, players can wear helmets, and special protective shirts are allowed for full-speed practice. Days 4 and 5 see players wearing “shells and spiders” for full-speed practice. At no point during those first five days is live contact permitted.
Training camp is also the time for position battles. New and returning players won’t just be battling for spots on the roster but spots in the lineup as well. Coaching staffs will design training camp sessions with the knowledge these battles will take place in the hopes they have an answer when the regular season comes around.
NFL Training Camp Storylines To Watch For
Every year, NFL training camps are chock full of stories to watch out for. From the progress of rookie quarterbacks, to position battles, there’s no shortage of entertaining storylines to whet the fan’s appetite in anticipation of opening kickoff for the 2023-2024 season.
Rookie QB Watch
The Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, and Indianapolis Colts each selected who they hope to be the face of their franchise in the 2023 NFL Draft. Each hopes that they can be their Day 1 starter as well. Training camp will be the first proving ground for these players to showcase if they’re ready for the league.
New York Jets Chemistry Experiments
Once training camp opens for the New York Jets, all eyes will be on how the team is melding together with new quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the helm. The first step in discovering how much of an upgrade Rodgers is starts in July.

Media and fans alike will want to see how the offense is faring against the Jets’ defense in practice. Is Rodgers finding open receivers? Is he fitting back into Nathaniel Hackett’s system that he won an MVP playing in? We begin to find out in July at training camp.
New Faces in New Places
Speaking of quarterbacks in new places, there were several players who changed teams this offseason. Derek Carr to the Saints and Jimmy Garoppolo to the Raiders, for starters. But it’s not just quarterbacks.
Odell Beckham Jr. being in Baltimore has created tons of buzz. His chemistry with Lamar Jackson will likely determine the outcome of the Ravens’ season under new offensive coordinator Todd Monken. We’ll get a sense of how that’s going when Baltimore opens up training camp.
