NFL Top RB Rankings, Week 7: King Henry rumbles to elite status

Versatile running backs have become a staple for teams in the NFL, and there are some greats at the top of the RB rankings going into Week 7.

    Top RB Rankings | 15-6

#15 – Kareem Hunt, Cleveland Browns

After being named an All-Pro with the Chiefs in 2017, Hunt has made a ferocious comeback with the Cleveland Browns the past two seasons. Since the injury to Chubb in Week 4, Hunt has had a chance to showcase that big-time ability once again, and he has not disappointed fans. He was held to only 40 yards rushing against the Steelers in Week 6 but remains one of the most underrated NFL running backs.

#14 – Melvin Gordon, Denver Broncos

Melvin Gordon has been a star in this league since his arrival as a first-rounder in 2015. However, he has moved on from the Chargers and is now a member of the Broncos. Despite the move, Gordon has continued to experience success in the Mile High City. While a DUI charge before the Week 6 game against New England and a timeshare with Phillip Lindsay are hits to the veteran’s 2020 outlook, he continues to be a productive player on the field.

#13 – Austin Ekeler, Los Angeles Chargers

A former part-time player behind Melvin Gordon, Ekeler finally got a chance to shine in 2019 and has carried over his success in 2020. Before suffering a hamstring injury early in Week 4, the all-purpose machine Ekeler accumulated almost 400 total yards and 17 catches on the season. He is slated to return in late November and should claim his starting role and possibly a spot in the top 10 sooner than later for Los Angeles.

#12 – Miles Sanders, Philadelphia Eagles

Sanders is a player that followed Saquon Barkley at Penn State and made a name for himself as a legitimate NFL prospect. He is a complete, three-down back that flashed with some long runs last season but has been given the full-time gig in 2020. He went over 100 yards rushing against the Ravens in Week 6 and looks like a legitimate player moving forward for the Eagles.

#11 – Nick Chubb, Cleveland Browns

Chubb started the season red hot for the 4-2 Cleveland Browns, rushing for 292 yards combined in the first three games. However, he was lost to an MCL injury in Week 4 and remains out a few more weeks on Injured Reserve. When healthy, he looks like a top-10 RB and forms one of the best tandems in football along with former rushing champion Kareem Hunt.

#10 – James Conner, Pittsburgh Steelers

After a pesky ankle injury limited Conner in the opening game against the Giants, he has strung together four games with a touchdown and over 400 yards total. He is a bruiser with surprisingly soft hands that is only two years removed from a 1,400-yard season with 13 touchdowns. He reminded fans of his potential with another 100-yard rushing effort against the rival Browns on Sunday afternoon.

#9 – Chris Carson, Seattle Seahawks

Maybe a bit overshadowed by one of the league’s most explosive passing attacks, Seattle’s Chris Carson has quietly put together a rather impressive 2020 season so far. He has over 400 combined yards and six total touchdowns for the Seahawks as they entered their Week 6 bye week as one of the final remaining unbeaten clubs.

#8 – Josh Jacobs, Oakland Raiders

After an impressive rookie campaign in 2019, the former Alabama star Jacobs has been equally as impressive in his second NFL season. He scored three touchdowns in a dazzling Week 1 performance against the Panthers and entered the Week 6 bye as the second leading rusher in football behind Minnesota’s Cook.

#7 – Joe Mixon, Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Mixon experienced a miserable start to the 2020 season, with no touchdowns and no more than 69 yards rushing through the first three games. Since then, the former second-rounder has amassed over 270 yards and three total touchdowns, including 69 total yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 6.

#6 – Aaron Jones, Green Bay Packers

While Aaron Rodgers has performed at an MVP-caliber level to start the 2020 season, his backfield mate Aaron Jones has been equally impressive. Jones experienced a breakout in 2019 and has continued that momentum with a great start this season. That fast start included another score on the ground against the Buccaneers this past Sunday. He is just outside the top-five NFL running backs.

The top 5 NFL running backs

#5 – Derrick Henry, Tennessee Titans

A catalyst for the Tennessee offense, Henry is a punishing runner that wears down defenses and opens things up for his quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Henry has rushed for at least two scores or 80 yards in each game this season. He had his best game of the season against the rival Texans in Week 6, as he rushed for a monstrous 212 yards and two touchdowns, with another 52 yards as a receiver. That type of epic performance is why Henry remains in the top RB rankings of 2020.

#4 – Dalvin Cook, Minnesota Vikings

Aside from Kamara, Dalvin Cook has been the most impressive NFL running back thus far in 2020. He is another great runner and receiver out of the backfield that stirs the pot for this Minnesota offense. A groin injury sidelined Cook for Week 6 but isn’t expected to hold him out long-term.

#3 – Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys

One of the tougher NFL running backs in the league, “Zeke,” has been incredibly durable for the Cowboys during his five years in the NFL. He has only missed two games due to injury and carried the ball 1,258 times in 61 games. That alone is one of the reasons he is in our top RB rankings. The elite Dallas runner has taken on an even bigger load this season following the loss of Dak Prescott in Week 5. That increased pressure amounted to two fumbles lost on Monday Night Football against the Cardinals.

#2 – Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints

A McCaffrey clone in New Orleans, Kamara has been on an absolute tear for the Saints this season. He is an elite dual-threat player that excels in the receiving game and entered Week 6 ranked third behind only DeAndre Hopkins and Amari Cooper in receptions (38) in 2020. Kamara has carried the offense in the absence of Michael Thomas and should continue his hot start following their Week 6 bye.

#1 – Christian McCaffrey, Carolina Panthers

A true do-it-all superstar for the Panthers since his arrival in 2017, McCaffrey has been sidelined since Week 2 with a high ankle sprain. He is the best overall running back in the league and an incredible difference-maker at the position when healthy. He will resume the role as the top player in the RB rankings sooner than later for a resurgent, young Carolina team.
