The dual roles of Tom Brady were tested last Sunday. In the Week 9 clash at Green Bay, the FOX analyst potentially violated the rules that had been placed for him.
The newest owner of the Las Vegas Raiders is under tighter scrutiny than any other broadcaster. The former New England Patriots quarterback has to balance his on-air duties with owner responsibilities.
NFL Takes a Stand After Tom Brady Violated the Rules
As per the “Brady rules,” the seven-time Super Bowl champion is barred from public criticism of officials and other franchises amongst others. During Sunday’s game between the Green Bay Packers and the Lions, Brady pushed that boundary.
With 6:18 remaining in the second quarter, Lions safety Brian Branch was first flagged for unnecessary roughness on Packers wide receiver Bo Melton. After the referee reviewed the foul, Branch was ejected from the game.
“I don’t love that call at all,” Brady said during the broadcast. “Obviously it’s a penalty, but to me, there has to be serious intent in a game like this.”
However, as per Front Office Sports Brady will not be punished or fined for breaching the rules on this occasion. The NFL currently “has no issue” with the comments from the Raiders owner.
What Are the Tom Brady Rules for His Broadcasting Job?
While Brady’s purchase of a 5% stake in the Raiders was still pending, the NFL drafted the Brady rules. The 47-year-old is in a unique position of simultaneously being an NFL owner and broadcaster, hence he’s receiving special treatment.
As per the rules, Brady cannot attend broadcast production meetings (in-person or virtually). He is not permitted to have access to any of the team’s facilities or players and coaching personnel. The 15-time Pro Bowler cannot attend other team’s practices; however, he can broadcast the Raiders’ games.
In Week 10, Brady is expected to broadcast the San Francisco 49ers at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, FOX has not clarified his schedule or his next stop.
