What Is a Practice Squad in the NFL?

The practice squad is an extension of every NFL team, allowing them to have extra players in-house in case there are significant injuries or the team believes the players they chose to keep need more development.

One example is the 2022 Los Angeles Rams. As injuries piled up, the Rams were forced to elevate names like RB Ronnie Rivers to fill backfield space and C Jeremiah Kolone to aid an offensive line decimated with injuries.

How Much Does a Practice Squad NFL Player Make?

The minimum a practice squad player makes each week is $12,500.

As for yearly salary, a non-active roster member can earn up to $207,000 on the practice squad.

What Are the Practice Squad Rules?

Outside of being available as injury replacements, there’s another reason for having the practice squad: To prepare for future opponents.

Practice squad members often mimic an opposing dual-threat quarterback, a speedy slot wide receiver, or a cat-quick edge rusher to get the starters prepared.

But how do teams determine their practice squad? It begins once players who were waived by the active roster cutdown deadline have officially cleared waivers. By Aug. 30 at noon ET, each NFL team can fill out the rest of the roster by adding to the practice group.

And, under new NFL rules, every team can build up to 16 players for non-active roster participants.

Do Practice Squad Players Travel With the Team?

Yes, but only if they’re pulled up by the coaching staff.

Again, a member of the practice squad can earn an active roster spot if there’s a key injury in the two-deep lineup and depth needs to be fulfilled.

Do Practice Squad Players Get a Super Bowl Ring?

Per CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) rules, players on the practice squad can indeed get a ring if their team wins the Super Bowl.

However, the ring is of lesser value compared to the crystallized ring starters receive.

How Long Can a Player Stay on the Practice Squad?

Unlike most NFL contracts, practice squad members are on a shorter time frame, as their deals are up for termination one week after the season ends. And this includes teams in the playoffs that get eliminated or end the year as Super Bowl champions.

As for how much experience qualifies a player as a practice squad option, it’s not just going undrafted in recent NFL Drafts. At the very least, six NFL players must have zero accrued seasons or one accrued season with fewer than nine active games to qualify for the practice squad.
