The Giants are searching for answers throughout their roster after winning just nine games over the past two seasons. One glaring area of concern that needs to be addressed in the short and long term is who will be calling the shots in the backfield.
According to the latest PFSN NFL mock draft, the New York Giants are projected to select quarterback Shedeur Sanders from the University of Colorado. The dynamic signal-caller threw for 7,364 yards and 64 touchdowns during his stint in Boulder and is considered one of the top two quarterback prospects in the draft.
Is Shedeur Sanders a Lock to be Drafted by the New York Giants?
The Giants own the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft. With Sanders expected to be on the board at selection time, most believe New York will draft and build around the promising quarterback.
However, according to Peter Schrager of Fox Sports, the Sanders-to-Giants scenario is far from a done deal.
“If Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter is higher on their board this gives them the luxury, they don’t have to take Shedeur Sanders,” Schrager said. “Here’s what’s interesting about Shedeur. His Pro Day is not until April 4th and the Giants have never had a private workout with him. He didn’t throw at the combine – they saw him at Colorado, but they haven’t done the workout yet.
“So [assistant coach] Mike Kafka and all the offensive staff for [head coach] Brian Daboll has to wait until April 4. The Pro Day is late. To not have any private workouts with him yet, they’re not hellbent on Shedeur Sanders yet. They’re not hellbent on Jaxson Dart or Cam Ward for that matter either.”
If Shedeur Sanders is there at 3, are the Giants set on taking him?

Schrager’s theory may be valid as New York has signed veterans Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson to deals in the past week. Winston signed a two-year deal, while Wilson signed a one-year contract.
Wilson also stated that he plans to be the team’s starter when the 2025 season begins.
“Yeah, I expect to be the starter and come in here and be ready to rock and roll every day,” Wilson said during his introductory news conference. “You’ve got to lead, I think this team is looking for someone to lead them in every way, in terms of the process, offseason, during the season, our habits and our thought process and how we create a great winning culture, and how do we continue to establish that, and to really build on all the things we do well, and the things we continue to need to do.
“And so I think the big part for me is just try to, it’s my 14th year to be able to lead an amazing group of men that really have big hopes and goals and dreams and desires, and we all share the same goal. And so I think that’s the best part of it is, I get to be around a lot of extremely talented guys.”
How Does PFSN Project Shedeur Sanders as a QB Prospect?
The New York Giants’ current quarterback situation sees them with Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito. They have the pieces of a developing roster and need a quarterback to take the spotlight. Sanders is the quarterback built to take that spotlight and shine. He may not make the “wow” plays Cam Ward does, but he is the safer projection to the NFL as far as talent.
The signing of Winston means that Sanders does not have to start Week 1. However, he will have a chance to compete alongside Winston and potentially earn that No. 1 role. This takes some of the pressure off Sanders, but it doesn’t put him in a spot where he has one of the more established veterans to compete with.
The quarterback room in New York quickly became crowded after the Winston and Wilson deals, but is Sanders still the Giants’ guy when the draft arrives?
