NFL Insider Floats One Condition Where Rams Could Potentially Trade Cooper Kupp and Matthew Stafford

Tom Pelissero discusses the possibility of the Los Angeles Rams potentially trading away both Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp.

Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams are off to a rough start this season. They are 1-4 and have a bye in Week 6. A knee injury has limited Puka Nacua to only one game this season. Cooper Kupp is also dealing with an ankle injury and has played only two games this year.

Stafford, despite his valiant efforts, cannot lead his team to wins without his top two receivers. Due to their poor record and injuries to key players, many thought that the Rams could consider trading either Kupp or Stafford or even both of them, to recoup some assets for the NFL Draft.

The chances of that happening are quite low, but NFL insider Tom Pelissero recently discussed a possibility where that could happen.

Tom Pelissero Discusses Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp’s Future With Rams

While hosting the “Rich Eisen Show,” Pelissero mentioned that if the Rams lose to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7 or the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8 they might be tempted to part ways with their stars.

“Either if you lose one, or maybe even both of those games between the Raiders and the Vikings. And then you have a long weekend to think about it. Are you going into sell mode? That’s really the question.”

“If you fall to 1-6 or even 2-5, you have to really be thinking about we’ve got some … Cooper Kupp is one. At this point, he’s not the youngest player anymore. He’s obviously had a ton of productivity, but he would command a lot … at the trade deadline,” added Pelissero

“Could Matthew Stafford be available? He’s essentially on a year-to-year plan and gave up his future guarantees. We don’t know if he intends to play football in 2025. What I’m saying is you lose a couple more games here, and you’re trying to think, how do we maximize what we can get? The guys at the top of that list are going to be your older skill position stars, and that’s Stafford and Kupp.”

When the Rams are healthy, they have one of the best offenses in the league. Kupp could play in Week 7 against the Raiders, and his presence on the field might be enough to get them a win.

They could potentially lose to the Vikings in Week 8 but will still have time to catch up and make a run for the playoffs. Nacua is out at least until Week 8 and could return from the injured reserve after that.

The Rams still have to play the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, and twice the Seattle Seahawks this season. If their team is healthy, they are more than capable of winning these games. As a result, the franchise could choose to wait until the offseason to trade away one of their marquee players unless they are blown away by an offer.

    Kupp and Stafford’s Contract Details

After a historic season in 2021 and winning the Super Bowl, Kupp signed a three-year $80.1 million contract extension with the Rams in 2022. He is under contract until 2027, and although there will be high trade interest from him around the league, the 31-year-old’s injury history will decrease the chances of a good return.

Stafford also signed an extension in 2022. He agreed to a four-year $160 million contract extension, but this past offseason, he restructured his contract, which removed all the future guaranteed money.

He could sign an extension after this season, which would make him a prime trade candidate. A team like the Dolphins could pursue him on a rental basis in case Tua Tagovailoa is unable to play this year.
