NFL games on TV today for Week 17
Miami Dolphins (10-5) at Buffalo Bills (12-3)
Channel: CBS
Start Time: 1 PM ET
While this game isn’t for the AFC East title, there is still plenty on the line for both Miami and Buffalo today. The Bills need a win or a Steelers loss to clinch the No. 2 seed in the AFC. However, while Miami can get in the playoffs with help from other teams, their clearest path to the postseason was winning out over the past three weeks.
QB Ryan Fitzpatrick tested positive for COVID-19 and will not be available for the Dolphins, meaning no fourth-quarter closer, but that shouldn’t really be an issue. Open up the playbook, run the hurry-up spread offense that has proven successful, and rookie QB Tua Tagovailoa should be fine. The matchup between the Bills defense and Miami offense will be the difference-maker, as it’s hard to see Buffalo’s starters finishing this game.
Baltimore Ravens (10-5) at Cincinnati Bengals (4-10-1)
Channel: CBS
Start Time: 1 PM ET
The Ravens’ playoff hopes looked bleak a few weeks ago, needing to win out and get some help along the way. Well, winning out has been no issue, and with some surprising losses in Week 16, Baltimore is just one win away from the postseason. Cincinnati has been playing some good football as of late, with QB Brandon Allen under center. However, the Ravens will be too much for the Benglas, who are allowing 130.9 rushing yards per game.
Pittsburgh Steelers (12-3) at Cleveland Browns (10-5)
Channel: CBS
Start Time: 1 PM ET
The Steelers got back in the win column in Week 16 and seem content to land wherever the AFC takes them. The Steelers have announced that DT Cam Heyward, C Maurkice Pouncey, LB T.J. Watt, K Chris Boswell, S Terrell Edmunds, and QB Ben Roethlisberger will not make the trip to Cleveland.
The Browns have had COVID issues all week with CB Denzel Ward, S Andrew Sendejo, TE Harrison Bryant, and others testing positive for the virus. However, QB Baker Mayfield does see the return of his receivers in Week 17. The Browns should beat the Steelers’ B-team, needing a win to make the postseason.
Minnesota Vikings (6-9) at Detroit Lions (5-10)
Channel: FOX
Start Time: 1 PM ET
After last week’s destruction at the Saints’ hands, the Vikings’ playoff hopes faded out with each Kamara touchdown scored. Minnesota started to turn things around late in the season, and this team is on the cusp. A victory over the Lions in this game today would be huge for the Vikings franchise. Lions QB Matthew Stafford is uncertain to play along with WR Kenny Golladay, who is headed to free agency. Minnesota RB Dalvin Cook should have his way against a bottom-five rushing defense.
New York Jets (2-13) at New England Patriots (6-9)
Channel: CBS
Start Time: 1 PM ET
Another of the games on the NFL TV schedule today, the Jets head to Gillette Stadium to take on the Patriots. New York took themselves out of the running for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft with a win over the Browns in Week 16. What’s even crazier is they head into this game with a decent chance for a three-game win streak to close the season. The receiving room is healthy and thriving, QB Sam Darnold has played well, and the defense has really stepped up during this two-game stretch.
The Patriots offense has been struggling a bit to end the season, as witnessed in the 38-9 thrashing from the Bills in Week 16. The Jets can go to Gillette and pull off the upset with HC Adam Gase’s last jab at Bill Belichick during his AFC East tenure.
Dallas Cowboys (6-9) at New York Giants (5-10)
Channel: FOX
Start Time: 1 PM ET
Both teams are somehow still in play for the NFC East title. Andy Dalton had the Cowboys offense firing on all cylinders over the past three weeks, scoring 36 points per game. Meanwhile, the Giants fumbled their hold on the NFC East crown with a three-game losing streak into Week 17. Even with a victory for either team, they would still need the Eagles to defeat the Washington Football Team to obtain a playoff berth.
Atlanta Falcons (4-11) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-5)
Channel: CBS
Start Time: 1 PM ET
Alright, it’s the Falcons and Buccaneers matchup; take two. After forwarning people of an inconsistent Atlanta squad week in and week out, they gave Tom Brady and company a scare with a strong performance in Week 15. The Falcons have a ton of talent on their team, but they can’t seem to put it all together in the end. Brady has been red-hot recently, and I think the Bucs should have zero issues, but my warning of a sneaky Falcons squad is still posted up.
Afternoon Games
Green Bay Packers (12-3) at Chicago Bears (8-7)
Channel: FOX
Start Time: 4:25 PM ET
This game should be very intriguing. The Bears have come alive to end the season and control their playoff destiny. QB Mitchell Trubisky is playing at a completely different level compared to earlier in the season. The Bears are averaging 36.7 points the past three weeks. They have also received some healthy contributions from RB David Montgomery, who has gone over 100 yards in three of the last five games.
However, the Packers want the No. 1 NFC seed because what’s harder than Lambeau in the winter, especially when home-field advantage is almost solely weather-based due to the current COVID restrictions? An even bigger obstacle standing in the Bears’ way is Aaron Rodgers’ MVP push. Rodgers is having one of the best seasons of his storied career. A dominating performance against a surging Chicago team could about wrap things up for the legendary signal-caller.
Las Vegas Raiders (7-8) at Denver Broncos (5-10)
Channel: CBS
Start Time: 4:25 PM ET
The Raiders take on the Broncos in another game on the NFL TV schedule today, kicking off at 4:25 ET. Gone are hopes of postseason fun, and in are serious questions about what the future of Las Vegas holds. Back-to-back late-season collapses form a trend that does not look good for HC Jon Gruden. A win against a division rival takes the Raiders out on a high note, but the drawing board will be exhausted this season trying to figure this out. Denver came up short against Los Angeles last week and has sorely missed their defensive assets lost to injury this season.
Jacksonville Jaguars (1-14) at Indianapolis Colts (10-5)
Channel: CBS
Start Time: 4:25 PM ET
The No. 1 pick is wrapped up, and murmurs of Urban Meyer replacing Doug Marrone after his expected firing following this game are rife. Jacksonville is easily the worst team in the league, right? Their only win was in Week 1, and they have lost 14 straight. A win over the Colts, who are in a win-and-in situation, would be highly improbable, but never impossible. Expect a red-hot Philip Rivers to take care of business against a horrific Jaguars defense.
Los Angeles Chargers (6-9) at Kansas City Chiefs (14-1)
Channel: FOX
Start Time: 4:25 PM ET
With the AFC’s No. 1 seed locked in, the Chiefs will rest QB Patrick Mahomes for the regular-season finale in preparation for the playoffs. Chad Henne gets the start under center, but no other players have been mentioned for rest. While Mahomes is out of this world, his playmakers are just as good, Henne might be under center, but WR Tyreek Hill and TE Travis Kelce are still catching his passes.
Los Angeles is playing for dignity at this point but played the reigning Super Bowl champions close earlier, forcing overtime in Week 2. Can lightning strike twice for the Chargers, and can they grab an underdog win in what seems to be Anthony Lynn’s last game for the franchise?
Arizona Cardinals (8-7) at Los Angeles Rams (9-6)
Channel: CBS
Start Time: 4:25 PM ET
Two separate playoff berths are on the line for two ailing teams on the NFL TV schedule today. The Rams need a win or a loss by Chicago to get in. Meanwhile, the Cardinals need a victory after last week’s faux pas against the 49ers. The Rams will be without their leading passer, rusher, and receiver in the season finale. HC Sean McVay has been forced to turn to QB John Wolford due to Jared Goff’s thumb injury.
Arizona has equal concerns at QB, with Kyler Murray suffering from a leg injury, but the QB stated he would play. This game could get ugly and should come down to defense. If so, the Rams should take this game.
Seattle Seahawks (11-4) at San Francisco 49ers (6-9)
Channel: FOX
Start Time: 4:25 PM ET
An outside shot at the NFC’s No. 1 seed means “Let Russ Cook” is in effect for Week 17. Seattle has a very slim shot, but a shot nonetheless. The Seahawks’ defense is playing its best ball down the stretch and gets a tune-up game against a sub-par 49ers offense before starting postseason play. WRs D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett have a chance to be the first Seahawks duo with 1,000 yards in a season since Joey Galloway and Brian Blades in 1995.
New Orleans Saints (11-4) at Carolina Panthers (5-10)
Channel: FOX
Start Time: 4:25 PM ET
Another NFL game on the Week 17 TV schedule today will see the Saints head to Carolina to take on the Panthers at 4:25. One week after tying the NFL record for rushing touchdowns in a game, the Saints will be without RB Alvin Kamara, or any of their RBs for that matter, after Kamara tested positive for COVID-19. The Saints will be without Kamara and WR Michael Thomas, meaning QB Drew Brees will have to find new playmakers within the offense to become the first team in the AFC South to sweep the division.
Tennessee Titans (10-5) at Houston Texans (4-11)
Channel: FOX
Start Time: 4:25 PM ET
No matter what happens with Indianapolis, if the Titans win, they will clinch the AFC South title. Texans QB Deshaun Watson continues to play at an unreal level, but his defense is just too big of an obstacle to overcome. Houston has the second-worst rushing defense in the league, surrendering 151.7 yards on the ground per game. RB Derrick Henry went for 212 yards and two touchdowns in the first matchup between these two teams. Unfortunately, the Texans should be in for the same kind of day.
