NFL Combine Officials Scramble To Accommodate Travis Hunter’s Dual Position

NFL executives have been scrambling to find ways to accurately accommodate Colorado Buffaloes star dual-threat athlete Travis Hunter at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. Due to Hunter’s unique blend of offensive and defensive skills, he should be eligible to show off his talents during the defensive back and wide receiver portions of the combine.

However, this has rarely been done in college or the NFL, let alone at the impressive levels Hunter performed during his years at Colorado. As a result, NFL scouting president Jeff Foster recently outlined how his team was trying to find a suitable outcome for this unique and special situation.

How Will NFL Accommodate Travis Hunter’s Positions at 2025 Scouting Combine?

Foster made clear that Hunter was one of the first individuals to participate in both the offensive and defensive sides of the Scouting Combine.

“To my knowledge, he’s the first to do that… We had to assign him to a group… We offered him to stay overnight and work with receivers… He’s earned the opportunity to do both here, and I’m sure fans would like to see it, too,” Foster stated.

    Where Will Hunter Be Drafted?

Hunter is one of the most versatile and exciting players in recent football memory. This year for the Buffaloes, he was simply unstoppable on both sides of the ball, accumulating 96 receptions, 1,258 receiving yards, 16 total touchdowns, four interceptions, and one forced fumble.

These phenomenal video game like numbers have made Hunter one of top prospects available in the upcoming April draft. In PFSN’s latest 7-round 2025 NFL Mock Draft, Hunter was selected No. 3 overall by the New York Giants.

“The New York Giants are one out of a couple of landing spots where Travis Hunter may be able to play both ways. The Giants need playmakers on both sides of the ball, and Hunter would provide that option. He will most likely be a full-time defensive player and then see some offensive snaps in certain situations.

The athleticism and versatility that Hunter offers are tantalizing. He is so good with the ball in his hands — it will be tempting to play him as much as possible. Any team drafting him will need to be smart because playing 1,500 snaps is close to impossible in the modern NFL. As a rookie, Hunter could also be a valuable special-teams option alongside playing on defense and then have a couple of packages a game on offense.”
