It’s been 28 years since the Dallas Cowboys last celebrated a Super Bowl victory, and it hasn’t been relatively close, either.
From the end of the Troy Aikman era to Tony Romo, and now Dak Prescott, the Cowboys have had plenty of star players on the roster over the last three decades that have been unable to end their title drought. While many obstacles have been in their way, one former Super Bowl champion has a real-clear solution as to why Dallas has struggled in big moments.
And it starts at the top.
Mark Schlereth Rips Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys Leadership
Since purchasing the team in 1989, Jerry Jones has been the face of the Cowboys. His ownership, coupled with his desire to be general manager of the organization, have left both success and failure at his feet.
On the Stinkin Truth Podcast, three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth made it clear that the Cowboys’ title drought is solely to do with Jones’ leadership style.
“It’s a lot more about organizational structure than I do about the quarterback you have playing,” Schlereth explained. “You never empower people, and when it comes to nut-cutting time, your organization falls apart.”
Mark Schlereth says as long as Jerry Jones is at the helm, he doesn't see the Cowboys winning.

The former NFL veteran won three Super Bowls and made it to two Pro Bowls during his career. Schlereth has seen the Cowboys’ recent run of regular-season success (three straight 12-win seasons), but lack of playoff success (one playoff win during that stretch) as something wrong with the organization.
While many will point to the poor performance of Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott, Schlereth believes there are bigger problems with how Dallas is structured.
“This is why, under Jerry, they just aren’t going to win,” Schlereth stated. “You create an organization of finger-pointers, guys who don’t take responsibility.”
In their latest postseason failure, the Cowboys were blown out at home by the upstart Green Bay Packers 48-32. At one point in the fourth quarter, though, Green Bay led by as many as 32 points — one of the worst showings in Cowboys playoff history.
During the game, it appeared Prescott and All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb were not on the same page multiple times. Prescott finished with over 400 yards passing and three touchdowns, but most of the numbers came in garbage time during the fourth quarter with the game out of reach.
After the game, Lamb’s mother went on Facebook stating “Dak ain’t it” regarding Dallas’ quarterback. Prescott’s brother also has since claimed that he wants the quarterback to leave Dallas due to the “drama and the so-called fans.”

To a former veteran and locker-room leader like Schlereth, the infighting that has gone on with the Cowboys doesn’t say much about the team itself, but what the front office and Jones personally allow to happen with this organization.
